A kaukázusi köztársaság belügyminisztériuma közölte: a tüntetésen néhány ezren vettek részt. Hatvan embert őrizetbe vettek „a rendőri intézkedéssel való szembeszegülés” miatt.
A tüntetést amiatt tartották, hogy a kormány beleegyezett négy határ menti lakatlan falu átadásába Azerbajdzsánnak.
A tiltakozás során kaotikus jelenetek alakultak ki, a tüntetők megpróbálták áttörni a rendőrségi kordont.
A tiltakozó mozgalmat Bagrat Galsztanján, az örmény apostoli egyház érseke vezeti, aki bírálja örmény területek szerinte illegális átadását Azerbajdzsánnak, és elítéli az Örményország által tett „egyoldalú és megalázó engedményeket”.
Nikol Pasinján a parlamenti képviselők előtt kijelentette: Jereván egy hónapon belül kész aláírni a békeszerződést Bakuval. A miniszterelnök védelmébe vette az Azerbajdzsánnal határos négy falu átadását, mondván, hogy ez szükséges engedmény a Bakuval való újabb konfliktus megakadályozásához.
A két ország több háborút vívott egymással: az 1990-es években zajló háborút Örményország nyerte meg, a 2020-as háborúban viszont Azerbajdzsán győzött. Baku a 2023. évi villámhadjáratban is győzelmet aratott a többségében örmények lakta azerbajdzsáni beékelődés, Hegyi-Karabah szakadárjai ellen, visszavéve az ellenőrzést a terület felett.

Úgy tudják, hogy a helyszínen lövések hangját is lehetett hallani, többen megsebesülhettek. Az örmény News.am szerint a rendőrségre a támadók egyike gránátokkal felszerelkezve tört be, azonban a hatóságok őt lefegyverezték. A helyi Belügyminisztérium szóvivője a sajtónak azt mondta, a gránátos férfit elfogták, jelenleg azon a kapitányságon tartják fogva, ahová betört.
Egyelőre nem tudni pontosan, hogy a támadók mit akartak, az azonban biztos, hogy a gránátos férfi két társa a támadásban megsérült.

A tiltakozók több utcát lezártak, de a forgalom a belvárosban zavartalan. Az őrizetbe vettek között van Andranik Tevanján ellenzéki vezető, aki csütörtökön az utcák eltorlaszolására szólította fel a tüntetőket.
Jerevánban a Hegyi-Karabah ellen január 19-én indított azerbajdzsáni hadművelet után kezdődtek a tiltakozások, a tüntetők a kormányépület elé vonultak, az ország vezetését és személyesen Nikol Pasinján miniszterelnököt téve felelőssé a fejleményekért.
Január 20-án az azerbajdzsáni védelmi minisztérium bejelentette, hogy az orosz békefenntartók közvetítésével tűzszüneti megállapodás jött létre az azeri hadsereg és az ellene harcoló hegyi-karabahi örmény fegyveres alakulatok között.
Szeptember 21-én az azerbajdzsáni Yevlax városban találkozó jött létre Baku és a hegyi-karabahi örmény lakosság képviselői között a „terület reintegrációjának megvitatására”.
