Az Egyesült Államok ENSZ-nagykövete, Linda Thomas-Greenfield vezette amerikai küldöttség megszakította látogatását röviddel azután, hogy lövöldözés tört ki a környéken. Azonnal távozott a helyszínről Helen La Lime, az ENSZ haiti különmegbízottja is.



A temetés előtti pillanatokban a tömeg „gyilkost” kezdett skandálni Léon Charles haiti rendőrfőnök megérkezésekor, mások pedig azt, hogy „hol van Jovenel?”.







A rendőrség körülzárta a Moise koporsójának helyet adó sátor területét, és könnygázt vetett be, miközben a távolban az égő gumiabroncsokból felszálló füstfelhőt lehetett látni.



Az érzelmektől fűtött és feszült hangulatú temetési szertartás a meggyilkolt elnök felesége, Martine Moise – aki megsebesült a férje elleni támadásban – megérkezését követően vette kezdetét, miközben a tömeg „igazságot” követelt, majd egyebek között azt skandálta, hogy „kössük fel őket”, „égessük el őket”, illetve „megölték Jovenelt, mi megválasztjuk Martine-t”.



A karibi országban uralkodó feszültség szerda, a háromnapos gyász első napja óta tart. Moise hívei és ellenzői között egyaránt akadnak olyanok, akik azt állítják, hogy az elnök meggyilkolása egy „összeesküvés” volt a fővárosi, Port-au-Prince-i székhelyű elit részéről a szegény, fekete többség ellen.







Csütörtökön tüntetők a fővárosból Cap-Haitienbe vezető utakat zártak le barikádokat emelve, amelyeket meggyújtottak. Egy hidat felgyújtottak, majd lövések dördültek el, miközben tiltakozók szétszóródtak szerte a városban, igazságszolgáltatást követelve a gyilkosság ügyében. Tiltakozók tüzet nyitottak egy étteremnél, megtámadtak egy külföldi operatőrt, és kövekkel hajigáltak egy diplomáciai járművet. A biztonsági őrök tüzet nyitottak, majd elmenekültek.



Délután a Port-au-Prince-i Nagyboldogasszony-templomban tartott gyászszertartáson a gyülekezet egyes tagjai szintén igazságszolgáltatást követeltek, sőt, egyesek annak a meggyőződésüknek adtak hangot: a néhai elnököt nem lehet eltemetni addig, amíg nem szolgáltatnak igazságot.



Moise-t július 7-én fegyveresek gyilkolták meg rezidenciáján, az indíték egyelőre nem ismert. Az elnökgyilkosság káoszba taszította a már amúgy is súlyos problémákkal küzdő karibi országot, ahol a bandák közötti, egyre fokozódó erőszak ezreket tett földönfutóvá, és visszavetette a gazdaságot az amerikai kontinens legszegényebb országában.

A férfi állítólag egy floridai székhelyű, venezuelai biztonsági magáncégtől bérelt fel kolumbiai zsoldosokat terve kivitelezéséhez.



A 63 éves orvos nemrég egy magánrepülőgépen érkezett Haitira. Ő a harmadik haiti származású, az Egyesült Államokban élő ember, akit letartóztattak az ügyben, a másik két gyanúsított is Floridában élt. Eddig huszonegy embert fogtak el. A rendőrség szerint összesen 26 kolumbiai zsoldos vett részt Jovenel Moise meggyilkolásában. Hármat közülük megöltek, tizennyolcat letartóztattak, öt ember pedig még szökésben van.



Magas rangú amerikai tisztségviselők vasárnap találkoztak Leon Charlesszal, hogy segítsék a nyomozást. Az 53 éves Jovenel Moisét szerdára virradóra gyilkolták meg rezidenciáján, egyelőre ismeretlen okokból. Az országban ezt követően kéthetes rendkívüli állapotot hirdettek. Haitit politikai válság sújtja, Jovenel Moisét – aki ellen nemrég erőszakos tüntetéseket is szerveztek – korrupció mellett azzal is vádolták, hogy bűnbandákkal áll kapcsolatban.



A meggyilkolt elnök egy ideje rendeleti úton kormányzott. Az országban nem tartottak választásokat, holott az ellenzék szerint az államfő mandátuma lejárt.



Haitin az utóbbi években elharapózott a bűnözés is, a súlyos szegénységgel küzdő ország egyes részeit fegyveres csoportok ellenőrzik. A gyilkosságot követően ketten is jelentkeztek az ideiglenes kormányfői tisztségért, Ariel Henry és Claude Joseph. Az elnök helyét a szenátust vezető Joseph Lambert vette át pénteken. Lambert Ariel Henry támogatója, akit még a meggyilkolt elnök nevezett ki miniszterelnöknek. Haitin szeptemberben tartanak parlamenti és elnökválasztást.
