A hétvégén három azonosítatlan légi eszközt semmisítettek meg amerikai harci repülőgépek: kettőt az amerikai, egyet pedig a kanadai légtérben, Yukon tartomány felett.
Kína saját területeként tekint Tajvanra annak ellenére, hogy a kínai kommunisták polgárháborús győzelme, 1949 óta a szigetnek önálló kormánya van. A Peking és Tajpej közötti feszültségek jelentősen fokozódtak azt követően, hogy Nancy Pelosi, az amerikai képviselőház akkori elnöke tavaly augusztusban Tajpejbe utazott. Megjegyezte: tisztában vannak azzal, hogy országok, vállalatok, tudományos szervezetek tevékenykednek a szóban forgó légtér-magasságokban, akár legitim kutatási célokból. Jelenleg a lelőtt tárgyak maradványait próbálják megtalálni, hogy teljesebb képet kaphassanak arról, milyen eszközökről van szó, de a körülmények nehezítik a keresést – mondta el a Pentagon vezetője. Hétfőn a Fehér Ház sajtótájékoztatóján a nemzetbiztonsági tanács kommunikációs koordinátora igyekezett eloszlatni azokat a híreszteléseket, miszerint földönkívüli légi eszközökről van szó. A feltételezések annak nyomán kezdtek el terjedni, hogy az Észak-amerikai Légtérvédelmi Parancsnokság (NORAD) parancsnoka vasárnap úgy fogalmazott, semmilyen lehetőséget nem zárna ki az azonosítatlan légi tárgyak származásával kapcsolatban. Glen VanHerck tábornok ugyanakkor arról is beszélt, hogy a megszaporodott észlelések azzal is összefüggésben lehetnek, hogy a kínai eszköz körüli incidens nyomán a légtérvédelem növelte a radarok teljesítményét, azok érzékenységét. Az elmúlt hét végén az amerikai légierő három ismeretlen eredetű légi eszközt semmisített meg: pénteken Alaszka északi partjai közelében, szombaton Kanada kérésére és együttműködve a szomszédos országgal Yukon tartomány fölött, majd vasárnap az Egyesült Államok Michigan állama közelében, a Huron-tó térségében.

Egyes elemzők szerint Peking ezzel a lépéssel igyekszik megerősíteni az álláspontját, miszerint az USA légterében megjelent elem valóban egy „civil ballon” volt.
Ahogy arról korábban beszámoltunk, néhány napja megjelent egy kínai ballon az USA légterében, amelyről Kína azt állította, hogy az időjárási jelenségek megfigyelésére alkalmazzák, ám a Pentagonnál ezt nem hitték el, mondván, egy kémkedéshez használt eszközről van szó.
Az említett ballont később kilőtték, s a hírek szerint arra készülnek, hogy a darabjait begyűjtsék és kielemezzék, ám ezt Peking nem igazán díjazza, majd egy másik ballon is feltűnt Latin-Amerika felett, bár a kolumbiai légierő szerint az nem jelentett veszélyt.
Majd az is szóba került, hogy már Trump elnöksége alatt is történtek ehhez hasonló incidensek, tehát nem ez az első alkalom, hogy ilyen jellegű helyzet adódik, s ezt követően Kína elárulta, hogyan kezelhet egy hasonló helyzetet az Egyesült Államok lépése után.
Nemrégiben pedig kiderült, hogy felmentették tisztsége alól a kínai meteorológiai hivatal vezetőjét, amelyet egyes elemzők úgy értékeltek, hogy Peking ezzel a lépéssel igyekszik megerősíteni az álláspontját, miszerint az USA légterében megjelent elem valóban egy „civil ballon” volt – írta a CNN.
Az élő közvetítés szerint az amerikai megfogalmazásban kínai „kémballon” helyi idő szerint nem sokkal délután fél 3 után süllyedni kezdett az Atlanti-óceán felett, miután elhagyta az Egyesült Államok keleti partvidékét, Dél-Karolina partjait.
Előzőleg a szövetségi légügyi hatóság átmenetileg leállította a légi közlekedést a körzetben, ami három nagy repülőtér forgalmát is érintette.
A parti őrség katonai művelet miatt a környékben hajózókat arra figyelmeztette, hogy hagyják el az környező vizeket.
Joe Biden elnök korábban szombaton a légi eszközre vonatkozó újságírói kérdésre úgy válaszolt, hogy „gondoskodni fognak” róla.
Az összefoglalók szerint az elnököt kedden tájékoztatták a légi eszköz észleléséről, ami vélhetően Alaszka felett ért amerikai terület fölé mintegy 20 kilométeres magasságban.
A védelmi minisztérium azt javasolta, hogy az eszközt ne próbálják megsemmisíteni a szárazföld felett, mert a polgári lakosságot fenyegető kockázat felülmúlja a kínai hírszerzési információk okozta lehetséges kárt.

Az incidens miatt a Anthony Blinken amerikai külügyminiszter lemondta a hétvégére tervezett kínai útját, amelynek célja az amerikai-kínai feszültség csökkentése lett volna. A miniszter közleménye szerint az eset olyan körülményeket teremtett, amelyek keresztül húzzák utazásának tervezett célját.

Azt egyelőre nem tudni, hogy Latin-Amerikán belül hol repült el a kérdéses léggömb, de annyit elárult Ryder, hogy nem az Egyesült Államok felé tart. Peking a második ballont illetően még nem adott tájékoztatást – csak az első léggömbről közölte, hogy meteorológiai célokat szolgált, és elnézést kért az amerikai légtér megsértéséért.
Washington rendkívül komolyan veszi az egyelőre kérdéses hivatású ballon ügyét. Antony Blinken külügyminiszter beszélt a kínai külügy vezetőjével, Vang Jivel, és egyértelművé tette számára, hogy az általa megfigyelőléggömbnek nevezett ballon berepülése az USA fölé megsérti az Egyesült Államok szuverenitását és a nemzetközi jogot.
Blinken az ügy miatt elhalasztotta tervezett kínai útját is, aminek pedig nagy jelentősége lett volna, amerikai külügyminiszter ugyanis 2018 óta nem járt Kínában. A két ország között feszült a viszony. Blinken elmondása szerint azért utazott volna Pekingbe, hogy olyan biztonsági intézkedésekben állapodjanak meg, amelyek segítenek megelőzni egy nyílt konfliktust Kína és az Egyesült Államok között.
Az Egyesült Államok nyomon követ egy feltételezett kínai megfigyelő léggömböt, amelyet néhány napja észleltek a légtere felett. Korábban vadászgépeket, köztük F–22-eseket is készenlétbe helyeztek, hogy lelőjék a léggömböt, ha a Fehér Ház erre utasítást ad, de Joe Biden elnök végül úgy döntött, hogy nem lövik le, mert azzal a léggömb alatti területeken élőket veszélyeztették volna .

Az incidensre akkor került sor, amikor Antony Blinken amerikai külügyminiszter a hétvégére várt első pekingi útjára indulna – vagy indult volna. Bár az utat hivatalosan nem jelentették be, mind Peking, mind Washington a közelgő érkezéséről beszélt. Nem világos, hogy a léggömb felfedezése befolyásolja-e Blinken utazási terveit.
A Billings Gazette című lap egy nagy fehér léggömböt ábrázoló fényképet rögzített a terület felett, de a Pentagon nem erősítette meg, hogy ez volt-e a megfigyelő léggömb. A léggömböt a felhők között lehetett látni, és úgy tűnt, mintha egy napelemes rendszer lógna az alján – mondta a CBC tudósítása szerint Larry Mayer, a Gazette fotósa.

A kormánytisztviselő szerint a kongresszusi vezetőket csütörtök délután tájékoztatták az ügyről. Kevin McCarthy, az amerikai képviselőház elnöke, a kaliforniai képviselőház elnöke a Twitteren azt írta: „Kína szemtelenül semmibe veszi az Egyesült Államok szuverenitását, ami destabilizáló akció, amivel foglalkozni kell.”
Kínával számos kérdésben különösen nagy a feszültség, kezdve Tajvantól és a Dél-kínai-tengertől kezdve a Kína nyugati Hszincsiang régiójának emberi jogain át a hongkongi demokráciaaktivisták elleni fellépésig. A listán nem utolsósorban szerepel az is, hogy Kína hallgatólagosan támogatja Oroszország ukrajnai invázióját, valamint nem hajlandó megfékezni Észak-Korea bővülő ballisztikus rakétaprogramját.
