Több mint tízszeresére nőtt a növénytakaró az Antarktiszon az elmúlt évtizedekben a klímaváltozás miatt: 1986-ban kevesebb mint 1 négyzetkilométernyi növényzet volt a kontinensen, 2021-re viszont már majdnem 12 négyzetkilométernyi.
Az Antarktisz zöldülése lehetőséget biztosít az inváziós fajoknak, hogy betörjenek a térség ökoszisztémájába. Egy ezzel foglalkozó új tanulmány társszerzője elmondta, az Antarktisz tájain továbbra is jég, hó és sziklák dominálnak, növények csak a földrész kis szegletében találhatók. Ez a kis szeglet azonban drámaian gyorsan terjeszkedik, ami megmutatja, hogy a klímaváltozás még erre a messzi vadonra is nagy hatással van. Hozzátette: a további melegedések alapjában fogják megváltoztatni ennek az ikonikus és sérülékeny régiónak a tájait.
Várhatóan ahogy egyre melegebbek lesznek a tengerek, úgy válik egyre kedvezőbbé az Antarktisz a növények számára. Először a mohák jelennek meg, amelyek a sziklákon is remekül megélnek, és alapjául szolgálnak egy olyan talaj létrejöttének, amelyből már más növények is kihajthatnak.
Jelenleg a kontinensen alig található táptalaj, és az is rossz minőségű, azonban a növénytakaró növekedése olyan szerves anyagokat juttat a fölrészre, melyek elősegítik majd a talajképződést.

A közel száz környezetvédelmi szervezet által életre hívott klímakoalíció szervezői szerint a klímaváltozás következményei szolidaritást követelnek a leginkább érintett, főként tengerközeli országokkal, emellett a környezeti változások által közvetlenül sújtott mezőgazdasági ágazatot különösen érintő következmények azonnali beavatkozást igényelnek – tudósított a Le Soir című francia nyelvű belga napilap.
Alternatív energiaforrások bevezetését követelik
A felvonulás résztvevői a fosszilis tüzelőanyagok felhasználásának visszaszorítását, az alternatív energiaforrások gyorsabb bevezetését, valamint az épületek szigetelésének hatékonyabb támogatását követelték. A belga baloldali pártok és szakszervezetek vezetőinek részvételével zajlott megmozdulás résztvevői szorgalmazták továbbá, hogy Belgium 2050-re kizárólag megújuló energiaforrásokat használjon, az energiaszektor extraprofitjának megadóztatására szólítottak fel, valamint jobb tömegközlekedést sürgettek a károsanyag-kibocsátás csökkentése érdekében.
A szervezők szerint a klímafelvonulás sikere évről évre bizonyítja, hogy az éghajlatváltozás mennyire aggasztja a belgákat. „A politika nem fordíthatja el a tekintetét, a felvonulás résztvevői ugyanis határozott és azonnali intézkedéseket követelnek a globális felmelegedés elleni küzdelem érdekében” – közölték a demonstrálók.

A tájékoztatás szerint időközben már 29 körzetben, különösen az ország északi részén vannak árvizek a még október végéig tartó esős időszakban. Az áradásokban utak és szántóföldek kerültek víz alá, házak és iskolák semmisültek meg.
Az egészségügyi ellátás mellett a vízellátás is összeomlott, mert az áradás kutakat tett tönkre és beszennyezte az ivóvizet.
Szakértők szerint a klímaváltozás hatásai Afrikában különösen a vízháztartás szélsőségeiben nyilvánul meg: Etiópiában, Szomáliában és Kenya egyes térségeiben, valamint Madagaszkár déli részein éveken át húzódó aszályok, ezzel szemben Dél-Szudánban, Nigériában, Kongóban és Burundiban masszív áradások pusztítanak.

Egy Hollandiához tartozó karibi sziget, Bonaire peres úton akarja elérni, hogy a hágai kormány megmentse a klímaváltozástól, amely miatt területének akár egyötöde is víz alá kerülhet.
Az NU.nl holland hírportál csütörtöki értesülése szerint a 300 négyzetkilométeres, 30 ezer lakosú karib-tengeri sziget lakosai lépéseket fontolgatnak a holland állammal szemben annak érdekében, hogy az megvédje a szigetet a klímaváltozás okozta kockázatoktól, köztük az emelkedő vízszint és az egyre pusztítóbb hurrikánok veszélyeitől.
A beszámoló szerint Bonaire lakói a Greenpeace környezetvédelmi szervezettel közösen még az év vége előtt, a holland kormányt hanyagsággal vádolva eljárást kezdeményezhetnek a karibi sziget környezeti kihívásokkal szembeni jobb védelmének kiépítése érdekében.
Indoklásuk szerint az amszterdami Vrije Universiteit (VU) által a Greenpeace megrendelésére készített tanulmányból kiderül, hogy az éghajlatváltozás egyebek mellett növeli a hurrikánok erejét, özönvízszerű esőzést okoz, a jégolvadásból eredő vízszintemelkedés pedig növeli az áradások veszélyét a régióban.
A Greenpeace szerint a holland kormány kevés figyelmet fordít az éghajlatváltozás okozta veszélyek megelőzésére a királyság karibi szigetein.
„A kormánynak kötelessége megvédeni a szigetet az áradásoktól és a klímaváltozás egyéb életveszélyes következményeitől” – fogalmazott Faiza Oulahsen. A Greenpeace Hollandia klíma- és energiaügyekért felelős vezetője reményét fejezte ki, hogy a jogi eljárás rákényszeríti a holland kormányt, hogy mindent megtegyen Bonaire lakosságának megvédésére az éghajlatváltozás következményeitől. Amíg Hollandia a legjobbak közé tartozik partjai és szárazföldje védelmében, addig nem tesz semmit a Karib-térségben található területei és lakossága érdekében – tette hozzá.
Az amszterdami Vrije Universiteit kutatója, Lotte van Oosterhout szerint a tengerszintemelkedéssel, korallpusztulással, gyakoribb hőséggel és egyre erősebb hurrikánok megjelenésével járó klímaváltozás elleni különleges védelem nélkül a kulturális örökséget is a pusztulás veszélye fenyegeti a szigeten, beleértve a rabszolgaság idejét felidéző épületeket és emlékműveket is.
A tanulmány szerint ha nem csökken jelentősen a globális károsanyag-kibocsátás, az emelkedő tenger megfelelő gátrendszer nélkül az évszázad végére akár Bonaire ötödét is elnyelheti. A sziget korallzátonya, amely védelmet nyújt a sziget számára az áradásoktól, szintén eltűnhet a kulcsfontosságú infrastruktúrával együtt.
