A tartományi közkapcsolati osztály tájékoztatása szerint a személyzet a hajótest egy repedését fedezte fel nagyjából a 40 kilométeres út közepén, a Siam-öbölben. A nagy hullámok miatt a kapitány úgy döntött, hogy lehorgonyozza a kompot, és azonnal segítséget hív.
A mentéshez más kompok, halászhajók és haditengerészeti egységek érkeztek, amelyek egy órán belül kimenekítették a 97 utast és a 10 fős személyzetet. Sérülésről nem érkezett hír.

A szerencsétlenség nem egészen négy nappal az után történt, hogy egy másik hajó hajótörést szenvedett az ország északkeleti részén, és a balesetben huszonöten meghaltak. A pénteki hajótörés után eddig húsz embert mentettek ki.
A komp konvojban úszott más hajókkal Kongó északkeleti részén, az utasok többsége karácsonyra hazautazó kereskedő volt – mondta el Joseph Kangolingoli, a szerencsétlenség helyszíne előtti utolsó város, Ingende polgármestere. Legkevesebb 15 ember meghalt és 19 eltűnt, amikor egy túlterhelt komp felborult Indonéziában, a Szulavézi-sziget partjainál – közölték hétfőn a helyi mentőszolgálat illetékesei.
A komp a Szulavézi délkeleti részén fekvő Buton Central régió egyik falujából, Lantóból indult a közeli Lagilibe, amikor nem sokkal éjfél után felborult.
A 20 ember szállítására alkalmas, fából készült kompnak 40 utasa volt. A mentők 15 utas holttestét találták meg, hat embert pedig kimentettek, de 19 ember után még több hajóval és búvárokkal folyik a kutatás a viharos tengeren.
Vasárnap a régió 9. évfordulójának ünnepét tartották, több ezren utaztak haza a faluikba, köztük sokan hajóval.

A tragédia után a helyi média, valamint több civil szervezet rámutatott arra, hogy a komp nem volt alkalmas ennyi ember szállítására. Kigyulladt egy személyszállító komp a Fülöp-szigetek közelében helyi idő szerint hétfő reggel. Hét utas meghalt, heten eltűntek – jelentette az ország parti őrsége.
A CNN beszámolója szerint az MV Mercraft 2 már a Quezon provinciában található Real kikötőjének közelében (7 kilométerre a parttól) hajózott, amikor kigyulladt. Polilio szigetéről helyi idő szerint hajnali 5 órakor indult a 134 személyt szállító komp, a segélyhívást pedig 6:30-kor indították a parti őrség felé.
A hatóságok közlése szerint öt nő és két férfi veszítette életét a tűzesetben, 23-an megsérültek, hét embert még keres a parti őrség, amelynek 120 utast sikerült kimentenie. A felvételek alapján a kétszintes kompon füstfelhő alakult ki, sokan mentőmellényben lebegtek a vízben és várták a segítséget.
A tűz oka egyelőre nem ismert, a hatóságok vizsgálata folyamatban van.
A CNN feleleveníti, hogy a Fülöp-szigetek tengeri biztonsága nincs a világ élvonalában: a hajóflotta öreg, és gyakran a megengedettnél több személyt szállítanak – ezúttal nem ez volt a helyzet, ugyanis 134-en utaztak a 186 fős kapacitású kompon.
1987-ben mintegy 5000 halottja volt annak a balesetnek, amelyben a Dona Paz személyszállító hajó ütközött egy olajtankerrel Mindoro szigetnél.

A nyugat-görögországi Igoumenitsa kikötőjéből az olasz Bindisibe tartó komp a népszerű turista célpont, Corfu szigete közelében gyulladt ki, a tűz okai pedig egyelőre ismeretlenek. Annyit viszont tudni, hogy az utasoknak sikerült időben a mentőhajókra felszállni.
