A túszejtők kárpótlást követeltek az apartheidellenes harcban játszott szerepükért.
Az incidens csütörtök késő este történt a háborús veteránok és kormányzati tisztviselők találkozóján, amelyen Mondli Gungubele, az elnöki hivatal egyik minisztere, valamint Thandi Modise védelmi miniszter és a helyettese vett részt.
„Éppen amikor elhagytuk a gyűlést, a kijárat felé tartottunk, bezárták az ajtókat. Ekkor jöttünk rá, hogy túszként tartanak minket fogva” – mondta Gungubele egy videófelvételen.
A tisztségviselő egy csoportot vezetett, hogy megvitassa a több mint két évtizeddel ezelőtt a fehér kisebbségi uralom megdöntéséért harcoló felszabadító mozgalmakban részt vevő veteránok követeléseit. A találkozót a főváros, Pretoria külvárosának egyik előkelő szállodájában tartották.
A veteránok előzőleg találkozót kértek Cyril Ramaphosa elnöktől, hogy megvitassák követeléseiket, köztük négymillió rand (mintegy 84 millió forint) készpénzkifizetést és további finanszírozást a veteránok vállalkozásalapításának segítésére.
A rendőrség tájékoztatása szerint 56 embert vettek őrizetbe.
Vish Naidoo rendőrségi szóvivő azt mondta, hogy miután kudarcba fulladtak a rendőrségnek a túszejtőkkel folytatott tárgyalási kísérletei, taktikát változtatva akcióba léptek, és sikeresen kiszabadították a túszokat. A művelet során nem adtak le lövéseket.
