Keresetet nyújtott be kedden egy demokrata párti képviselő Donald Trump volt amerikai elnök és személyes ügyvédje, Rudy Giuliani ellen egy szövetségi bíróságon lázítás és összeesküvés miatt a Capitolium ostromával összefüggésben.
A polgári jogi keresetet, a képviselőházi nemzetbiztonsági bizottságban elnöklő Bennie Thompson terjesztette elő a washingtoni szövetségi kerületi bíróságon.
A kereset szerint a volt elnök és ügyvédje megsértette a Ku Klux Klan fehér felsőbbrendűségi szervezettel szemben 1871-ben hozott törvény rendelkezéseit.
„A lázadás Trump, Giuliani és az Oath Keepers, illetve a Proud Boys féle szélsőséges csoportok által gondosan kidolgozott terv eredménye volt, ők mindannyian azt a közös célt tartották szem előtt, hogy megfélemlítést, zaklatást és fenyegetést alkalmazva megállítsák az elektori szavazatok hitelesítését” – áll a perkereset beterjesztését követően nyilvánosságra hozott közleményben.
Trumpot szombaton felmentette az Egyesült Államok szenátusa az ellene – lázadás szítása vádjával – indított alkotmányos felelősségre vonási eljárás (impeachment) végén. A szenátus az eljárás utolsó tárgyalási napján 57:43 arányban találta Trumpot a felhozott vádak alapján bűnösnek, így nem lett meg az elítéléséhez szükséges kétharmados többség. A demokrata párti szenátorokkal szavazott hét republikánus szenátor is.
A felsőházban kisebbségben lévő republikánusok vezetője, Mitch McConnell a voksolást követően világossá tette, hogy Trumpot felelősség terheli a január 6-án történtekért. „Nem kérdéses, hogy Trump elnök gyakorlatilag és erkölcsileg is felelős az aznapi események kiprovokálásáért” – jelentette ki McConnell. Jason Miller, Trump egyik tanácsadója elutasította a keresetben foglalt vádakat a szenátusi impeachment-eljárásban született eredményt idézve.
Trump ellen lázadás szítása miatt emelt vádat januárban a képviselőház, mert január 6-án tartott, gyújtó hangvételű beszédét követően támogatói megrohamozták a Capitolium épületét. Giuliani ugyanazon a tömegrendezvényen, amelyen Trump is beszélt kijelentette: „legyen párbaj általi ítélet”. A Capitolium elleni támadásban öten életüket vesztették, köztük egy rendőr is. A rendbontással kapcsolatban több mint 200 személy ellen indult eljárás.
