Észak-Koreában kivégezték Ri Dzsongho volt külügyminisztert, illetve a külügyminisztérium több más dolgozóját. Az áldozatokat az kötötte össze, hogy mind dolgoztak a brit nagykövetségen. A források szerint Észak-Korea elkezdte fokozni a külföldön dolgozó diplomatáinak az ellenőrzését, nehogy disszidálni próbáljanak.
Ri Dzsongho volt észak-koreai külügyminisztert a hírek szerint tavaly végezhették ki – erről több, az ország belügyeit ismerő forrás nyilatkozott a Jomiuri Sinbun című japán napilapnak. Az általuk közölt információk szerint Ri mellett több külügyminisztériumi dolgozót is kivégeztek gyors egymásutánban.
A források azt is közölték, hogy Észak-Korea elkezdi szigorítani a külföldön dolgozó diplomatáinak az ellenőrzését, hogy megelőzhessék, hogy a tisztviselők elbizonytalanodjanak az észak-koreai ideológiákban.
A politikai tisztogatásokra tavaly nyáron és ősszel kerülhetett sor. Egyelőre nem tudni, hogy pontosan miért kellett kivégezni a tisztviselőket, de annyi biztos, hogy az összes érintett dolgozott Észak-Korea Egyesült Királyságban működő nagykövetségén. Feltételezhetően valamilyen a nagykövetséggel kapcsolatos probléma miatt ítélték halálra őket.
A brit követség akkor került a figyelem középpontjába, amikor Thae Jong-ho a Koreai Köztársaság Nemzetgyűlésének tagja és nagy-britanniai nagykövet 2016-ban disszidált.
A Jomiuri Sinbun azt írja, hogy a kivégzett külügyminisztériumi tisztviselőkhöz közel álló diplomaták között most nyugtalanság uralkodik.
Sokan félnek, hogy a tisztogatás még nem ért véget. Az észak-koreai hatóságok már elkezdték fokozni a külföldön dolgozó diplomaták ellenőrzését.
Ri amellett, hogy az Egyesült Királyságban dolgozó nagykövet volt, aktívan részt vett az észak-koreai nukleáris kérdésekről folytatott hatoldalú tárgyalásokban. Az Egyesült Államokat legjobban ismerő diplomatának számított, és tagja volt a Trump-kormányzattal történő tárgyalásokat lefolytató csapatnak is.
Ri Dzsongho 2004-től 2008-as lemondásáig volt Észak-Korea külügyminisztere.
