Az elviselhetetlen szmog miatt a hatóságok határozatlan időre bezárták az összes iskolát és főiskolát Indiai fővárosában, Újdelhiben. Bezárták a szénerőművek egy részét, korlátozták a forgalmat a levegő minőségének javítása érdekében. Egyes helyeken a normális érték nyolcszorosára növekedett a légszennyezettség mértéke.
Néhány iskola már a múlt héten bezárt az elviselhetetlen szmog miatt, az indiai kormány közölte, hogy a levegőminőség javítása érdekében további lezárást fontolgat, mivel sűrű szmog gyakorlatilag élhetetlenné teszi a várost.
A PM2,5 – az emberek tüdejét eltömítő apró részecskék – szintje Újdelhiben jóval magasabb, mint az Egészségügyi Világszervezet (WHO) irányelvei által biztonságosnak mondott érték.
A város több részén kedden 400-hoz közeli vagy annál magasabb értékeket mértek, ami a súlyos kategóriába sorolható.
A levegőminőségi index vagy AQI szerint a nulla és 50 közötti érték jónak, az 51 és 100 közötti pedig megfelelőnek számít – írta meg a BBC.
Több tényező, például az autók és az ipari létesítmények károsanyag kibocsátása, a por és az időjárás miatt Újdelhi a világ legszennyezettebb fővárosa a levegő minőségének szempontjából.
A levegő különösen a téli hónapokban válik mérgezővé. A légmozgás hiánya tovább fokozza a légszennyezést,mivel a szennyező anyagokat az alsó légrétegekben tartja meg.
Idén a légszennyezés mértéke olyan szörnyűvé vált, hogy az indiai Legfelsőbb Bíróság szigorú figyelmeztetést adott ki, amelyben arra utasította az állami és szövetségi kormányokat, hogy hozzanak azonnali intézkedéseket a probléma kezelésére.
Az építési munkálatokat betiltották november 21-ig, de kivételt tettek a közlekedési és védelmi célú projektek esetében,továbbá tilos a teherautók behajtása Delhibe és a szomszédos Uttar Prades, Pandzsáb, Harijána és Radzsisztán államokba, kivéve azokat, amelyek alapvető árucikkeket szállítanak.
A város 11 szénalapú erőművéből csak ötnek engedélyezték a további működését.
Az amerikai kutatócsoport, a Chicagói Egyetem Energiapolitikai Intézetének (EPIC) jelentése szerint az indiai városok rendszeresen vezetik a globális légszennyezettségi rangsorokat, és a rossz levegő évente több mint egymillió ember halálát okozza.
Hozzátették, hogy Észak-Indiában „tízszer rosszabb levegőt lélegeznek be az emberek,mint bárhol máshol a világon.”

Ez azonban csak egy dolog. Több száz vegyi ipari cég működik azonban az Ida hurrikán útvonala mentén, ahol számtalan levegőminőséget ellenőrző készülék hagyta abba a működést.
Annak érdekében, hogy még az Ida hurrikán érkezése előtt megszabaduljanak a környékbeli cégek a toxikus anyagoktól, kéményeken keresztül lánggal égetik el. A hurrikán azonban „elfújta” ezeket a lángokat, és ennek következtében szennyező anyagok kerülhettek a levegőbe a térségben. Bár a hurrikán okozta pusztítás láthatóbb nyomai nagyobb hangsúlyt kaptak eddig, arra hívják fel a figyelmet, hogy a potenciális mérgező füstök jelentős egészségügyi kockázattal járnak.
Louisianát egyébként még csütörtökön érte el Ida: közel egymillió otthon és vállalkozás maradt áram nélkül, valamint több százezren nem jutnak jelenleg tiszta ivóvízhez. Bár a telefonvonalak nagy része sem működött huzamos ideig, az amerikai partiőrség eddig 17 hívást kapott légszennyezés miatt: számos helyen ammónia jutott a levegőbe, mert az ezt „megsemmisítő” lángokat kioltotta a vihar. Ráadásul a hurrikán sújtotta térségben van az USA kőolajfinomító létesítményeinek körülbelül 50, és földgáz feldolgozó üzemeinek 51 százaléka.
Egyelőre megbecsülni sem tudják a szakértők és a hatóságok, milyen károkat okozhat a levegő szennyezése a hurrikán – és az olajfinomítók működése – következtében. Az ilyen ipari létesítmények már korábban is rendkívül veszélyesnek minősültek hurrikánok következtében: a cikk szerint a Harvey hurrikán alatt 2017-ben a levegőben 39 százalékkal nőtt a kibocsátás. Ha működnek a levegő minőségét ellenőrző rendszerek, hamar értesíteni tudják a lakosságot arról, hogy veszélyes kint tartózkodni.
Az Ida hurrikán okozta áramkimaradás miatt azonban az olajfinomítóknál és földgáz egységeknél működtetett, kártalanító égetés is elmarad, így a toxikus anyagokkal teli, fekete füst a levegőbe kerül.

Évek óta tartó perben született precedens értékű döntés: az angol bíróság állapította meg először a világon, hogy a határértéket meghaladó légszennyezés felelős egy 9 éves kislány haláláért.
Jogi történelmet írt az a brit halottkém, aki először állapította meg, hogy a határértéket meghaladó légszennyezés hozzájárult egy 9 éves kislány, Ella Kissi-Debrah súlyos asztmájához, légzőszervi megbetegedéséhez és végül halálához – írja a Guardian.
A kislánynak számtalan rohama volt és a halála előtti 3 évben közel 30-szor került kórházba.
A döntés nemcsak az Egyesült Királyságban, de az egész világon példa nélküli. Az ítéletet hosszas jogi csatározás előzte meg, Ella Kissi-Debrah ugyanis még 2013-ban halt meg. Korábban asztma és légúti rendellenesség szerepelt a halála okaként, ezt egészítette ki a bíróság a légszennyezéssel.
Az ügyben az NO2-szennyezés és a szálló-por koncentráció volt kulcs, ezt leginkább a közlekedéshez és főleg a dízel autókhoz lehet kötni.
A kislány egész életében Lewishamben élt, ahol a nemzeti és az EU-s és az Egészségügyi Világszervezet határértéket is meghaladta a légszennyezés.
A család ügyvédjei azt akarták elérni, hogy a légszennyezést közegészségügyi vészhelyzetként kezeljék és hogy az ügy ráirányítsa a figyelmet arra, hogy sürgősen kezelni kell a szennyezett levegő kérdését.
Sadiq Khan, London polgármestere is mérföldkőnek nevezte az ítéletet és arra hívta fel a figyelmet, hogy a döntéshozóknak minél előbb mindent meg kell tenni, hogy más családok ne kerüljenek ugyanebbe a helyzetbe, mint a kislány szülei.
