Több százan, főként külföldi turisták rekedtek a Machu Picchu lábánál, miután Peru határozatlan időre bezáratta turistalátványosságot az ország elnöke elleni folyamatos tüntetések miatt.
A BBC idézte a kormány közleményét, mely szerint a turisták és saját állampolgáraik védelme érdekében döntöttek a bezárásról.
A tüntetők új választásokat és Dina Boluarte elnök lemondását követelik, valamint azt, hogy engedjék szabadon baloldali elődjét, Pedro Castillót, aki börtönben van lázadás és összeesküvés vádjával.
A decemberben kezdődött tüntetéseknek már több tucat halottja van. A legutóbbi összecsapások során utakat zártak le, és a rendőrség könnygázt is bevetett be a köveket dobáló tüntetőkre a fővárosban, Limában.
A Machu Picchunál nem először rekednek turisták a tüntetések miatt. Decemberben a hatóságoknak több száz külföldit kellett kimenekíteniük a környékről. A perui kulturális minisztérium azt ígérte, hogy akik most nem jutottak fel, a jegyüket később is felhasználhatják.

Több száz turista rekedt Peru fő látványossága, a Machu Picchu melletti kis településen. Sokan már négy-öt napja várnak arra, hogy a zavargások miatt leállított vonatok újrainduljanak.
„Nem kapunk sok információt a helyi hatóságoktól. Az otthon lévő ismerőseimre hagyatkozom. Próbálunk megoldást találni arra, hogy elmehessünk. Főleg az időseket és a betegeket szeretnénk kijuttatni innen” – mondta egy amerikai férfi.
A Machu Picchu melletti Aguas Calientes nagyon félreeső helyen fekszik. A legközelebbi városig, Ollantaytambóig most kiszámíthatóan csak egy harminc kilométer hosszú túrával lehet eljutni, a sínek mentén. Ez viszont nem mindenkinek opció.
„El szeretnénk menni. Sétálnánk is, de az édesanyámnak és nekem két bőröndünk van, mindkettő vagy harminc kilós, úgyhogy nem tudunk végigsétálni az ösvényen” – magyarázta egy hongkongi nő.
Peru más részein turisták ezrei vannak hasonló helyzetben a lezárt repülőterek és az úttorlaszok miatt. A Pedro Castillo elnök letartóztatását követően kitört zavargásokban már több mint húsz ember halt meg.
