A Gázai övezetet uraló iszlamista Hamász szervezet az izraeli vaskupola légvédelmi rendszer hatástalanításán dolgozott a lerombolt gázai médiaközpont épületében – jelentette a The Times of Israel című angol nyelvű izraeli hírportál kedden.
Gilad Erdan, Izrael Washingtonba delegált nagykövete kedden az AP hírügynökség székházában katonai források alapján újabb részleteket tett közzé a Gázai övezetbeli toronyépület elleni izraeli légicsapásról, amelyet a májusi, 11 napos Falak őrzői hadművelet idején hajtottak végre. Erdan egyrészt segítséget ajánlott a hírügynökségi székház újjáépítéséhez, másrészt elmondta, hogy a Hamász a felrobbantott épületet egy olyan rendszer kifejlesztésére használta, amely elektronikus úton távolról megzavarta volna Izrael vaskupola védelmi rendszerét.
Erdan az AP New York-i irodájában találkozott Gary Pruittal, a hírügynökség elnökével és Ian Phillips nemzetközi hírekért felelős alelnökkel. Elmagyarázta nekik az al-Dzsala torony lerombolásáról meghozott döntés hátterét. Az épületben működött az AP mellett az al-Dzsazíra pánarab hírtelevízió gázai irodája is.
Az újságírókat szolgáló épület felrobbantása nemzetközi felháborodáshoz vezetett. A légicsapás előtt az izraeli hadsereg figyelmeztette az ott dolgozókat, akik egy órát kaptak a távozásra, és nem sérültek meg.
Gilad Erdan elmondta, hogy noha a Hamász elektronikus rendszere még nem működött az épület felrobbantásának idején, de mégis közvetlen fenyegetést jelentett az izraeli civilek számára, és ennek felszámolása elsőbbséget élvezett az izraeli hadseregben. Az izraeli nagykövet megismételte a korábban bejelentett okot is, miszerint a toronyépületben a Hamász katonai hírszerzéssel foglalkozó, valamint kutatási és fejlesztési osztálya és egy technológiai egysége is működött.
A nagykövet az AP-t a világ egyik legfontosabb hírügynökségének nevezte, és hangsúlyozta, hogy Izrael nem gyanakodott arra, hogy alkalmazottai tudtak a Hamász titkos egységének jelenlétéről. Ezzel a megjegyzésével Erdan enyhíteni próbálta az izraeli hadsereg vezérkari főnökének, Aviv Kochavinak a múlt hónapban tett kijelentését, miszerint az AP újságírói az épület bejáratánál lévő kávézóban a Hamász embereivel itták reggeli kávéjukat akár tudták ezt, akár nem.
Az AP nyilvánvalóan hamisnak nevezte ezt az állítást, s megjegyezték, hogy nem volt kávézó az épületben. Beni Ganz izraeli védelmi miniszter később azt mondta külföldi újságíróknak, hogy Kochavi csak a légkör bemutatására, képletesen beszélt a nemzetközi médiumoknak otthont adó helyről.
Erdan hangsúlyozta, hogy Izrael továbbra is fontosnak tekinti a sajtószabadságot, és az újságírók biztonságának megőrzésére törekszik, bárhonnan is tudósítanak.
