A pancsolt szeszek nagy problémát jelentenek Délkelet-Ázsia turistaparadicsomaiban. Különösen a kispénzű, hátizsákos turisták lehetnek veszélyben a metil-alkoholt tartalmazó italokkal szemben.
Újabb halálos áldozatot követelt Laoszban egy metil-alkohol mérgezés, mely így már hat fiatal hátizsákos turista életét követelte. A mérgezésben a 19 éves ausztrál Holly Bowles a legújabb áldozat a pénteki hírek szerint, míg csütörtökön barátnője, a szintén 19 éves Bianca Jones és a 28 éves brit ügyvédnő, Simone White már csütörtökön életét vesztette.
A metil-alkohol mérgezésben elhunyt Holly Bowles A BBC beszámolója szerint a feltehetőleg pancsolt szesz okozta mérgezésben egy meg nem nevezett amerikai férfi és egy 19, valamint egy 20 éves dán lány is életét vesztette a laoszi Vang Viengben, ami a hátizsákos turisták útvonalának kedvelt csomópontja.
Nagy probléma a térségben a metil-alkohol
A történtek rávilágítanak a Délkelet-Ázsiában gyakori problémára, ahol a hagyományos etil-alkoholnál olcsóbb metil-alkoholt sokszor használják hamisított vagy házilag készített alkoholok gyártására. A metil-alkohol ráaádsul a házi főzésű szeszeben is megjelenhet, ám hatása jóval károsabb a hagyományos szeszeknél és akár halálos is lehet.
Noha a két ausztrálnak szállást adó Nana Backpacker Hostel szerint a mérgezés előtti estén ingyen osztogattak feleseket mintegy 100 vendégnek, a szállás menedzsere szerint mások nem lettek rosszul, így nem világos, hogy a két áldozat hol jutott a halálos italhoz.
A térségben a metil-alkohol különösen a szegényebb vidékeken okoz gondot, ahol gyenge a fogyasztóvédelem és ahová a hatóságok keze sem minidig ér el. A régió egyik legszegényebb országaként pedig Laosz ideális terep a pancsolt italokkal seftelők számára, még akkor is, ha a turizmusból élő térség számára nem jelentenek épp kifejezetten jó reklámot a metil-alkohol mérgezésről szóló hírek.
A jelenség Indonéziában a leggyakoribb, ami a Don’t Drink Spirits in Bali Facebook-oldal születéséhez is vezetett, és melynek üzemltetője szerint hetente érkezik jelentés a térség országaiból, mely alkoholmérgezésről szól.
