Fegyveresek támadtak egy mexikói börtönre az északi határvárosban,Ciudad Juarezben, aminek során legkevesebb 14 ember meghalt, 24 rabnak pedig sikerült megszöknie. Erről az állami tisztviselők számoltak be az incidenst követően.
A vasárnap kiadott hivatalos közleményben az ügyész azt mondta, a támadók helyi idő szerint reggel 7 órakor érkeztek meg a helyszínre, páncélozott járművekkel, majd tüzet nyitottak az őrökre.
A tűzharcban 10 börtönőr és 4 rab vesztette életét. Az államügyész elmondása szerint legalább 13 ember megsebesült a támadásban. A börtönben néhány lázadó rab tárgyakat gyújtott fel, miközben összecsaptak a börtönőrökkel – írja az Al Jazeera.
A mexikói katonák és az állami rendőrség később, még a vasárnap folyamán visszaszerezte a kontrollt a börtön felett. Legalább négy embert őrizetbe vettek, de egyelőre nem tudni, hogy azok a rabok vagy a fegyveres támadók közül valók-e.
A mexikói börtönökben gyakoriak az erőszakos cselekmények, köztük olyan intézményekben is, ahol a hatóságok csak névleges ellenőrzést tartanak fenn. A rivális bandák rabjai között rendszeresen törnek ki összecsapások, akik közül többen a drogkartellek megbízásából cselekednek.
Augusztusban szintén egy állami börtönben tört ki lázadás, ami a Ciudad Juarez utcáira is átterjedt. Akkor 11 ember vesztette életét, mialatt két rabbal végeztek a börtönben, és a bandatagok lövöldözni kezdtek az utcán. Többek között négy rádióállomás alkalmazottjával is végeztek, akik akkor promóciós eseményt tartottak egy étteremben.
Nem sokkal a legutóbbi támadás előtt a Ciudad Juarezben rendőrökre támadtak, majd az üldözés végén sikerült elfogniuk négy férfit a hatóságoknak. Később a rendőrség megölt két feltételezett támadót, akik egy SUV-ban utaztak.
