A helyi sajtó és a civil szervezetek beszámolója szerint földcsuszamlás csapott le egy jádebányára Mianmar északi részén, amely miatt több tucat ember eltűnt.
A katasztrófa helyi idő szerint hajnal 4-kor, a mianmari jádebányászat központjának számító Kachin államban történt, ahol a feltételezések szerint legalább 80 embert sodorhatott el a földcsuszamlás – írja a France24.
Az egyik civil szervezet szerint az a probléma a helyzettel, hogy az érintett emberek bányászati szennyvizet kaphatott a nyakába, amely egy közeli tóba sodorta őket, így már önmagában a nyakukba szakadt víz kellő toxikus anyagot tartalmaz, hogy alkalmas legyen károkozásra.
A halálos földcsuszamlások, valamint egyéb bányászati balesetek meglehetősen gyakorinak számítanak Mianmar a szabályozatlan, vadnyugati bányászati szektor miatt, ami nagyon sok szegény mianmari munkást vonzz évről évre.
A legsúlyosabb baleset még tavaly júliusban történt, amikor 170 ember, főként vendégmunkások vesztették életüket a Kachin állambeli Hpakant bányászati régióban, szintén azt követően, hogy a munka során keletkezett szennyvíz rájuk szakadt.
A puccsal megbuktatott Aung San Suu Kyi már ígéretet tett korában arra, hogy rendet tesz a mianmari bányászati szektorban, amely lényeges részét adja a gazdaságnak, erre azonban nem került sor az ideje alatt, a junta pedig aktívan kihasználja az illegalitást.
Érdekesség, hogy Mianmar felelős a világ jádekészletének 90 százalékáért, a gyönyörű drágakő főként mianmari bányákból kerül a boltokba. A legtöbb drágakövet Kína felé exportálják, amely komoly bevételi forrást jelent a katonai eliteknek és az etnikai fegyveres csoportoknak.
