Az olasz állam és az Európai Unió forrásai törvénytelen felhasználása, csalás, valamint az illegális bevándorlás elősegítése miatt csütörtökön több mint tizenhárom év börtönre ítélték első fokon Mimmo Lucanót, a dél-olaszországi Riace volt polgármesterét, amely a bevándorlók befogadása jelképes városaként vált ismertté.
A nem jogerős ítélet tizenhárom évet és két hónapot szabott ki, ami az ügyész által kért börtönbüntetés majdnem kétszerese. A bíróság még nem közölte az indoklást, de a Domenico, ismertebb nevén Mimmo Lucanóval szembeni vádak között a menedékkérők ellátására fordítandó állami és európai forrásokkal való visszaélés, sikkasztás, csalás, valamint az illegális bevándorlás elősegítése is szerepel. Mimmo Lucano 2004 óta vezette a calabriai Riace városát.
A balközép pártokhoz közeli, de független színekben politizáló polgármesternek 2018-ban kellett felállnia székéből, miután a pénzügyőrség vizsgálatot indított ellene. Az ezerkilencszáz lakosú városban négyszázötven migráns letelepedését biztosította, amivel Riace a bevándorlók befogadása jelképes helyszínévé vált. Wim Wenders rendező 2010-ben interjúfilmet forgatott Mimmo Lucanóról, 2016-ban az amerikai Fortune magazin a világ ötven legbefolyásosabb személyisége közé választotta be.
Az ítélet megerősítette a korábbi ügyészi vizsgálatot, miszerint a polgármester az arra nem jogosult illegális bevándorlókat is letelepedéshez juttatta, csak azért, hogy a bevándorlók segítésére szánt források felett rendelkezhessen több százezer euró értékben.
A nyomozás szerint Mimmo Lucano szabálytalanul használta fel a hulladékfeldolgozásra fordított állami és európai forrásokat is. A baloldali Demokrata Párt (PD) szolidaritását fejezte ki Lucanóval „túlzásnak” nevezve a bíróság első fokú döntését. A Liga vezetője Matteo Salvini – aki 2018-ban belügyminiszterként negatívan értékelte Mimmo Lucano befogadási politikáját – most úgy nyilatkozott, hogy a baloldal elítélt politikusokat foglalkoztat, mivel Mimmo Lucano a következő hétvégén a baloldal jelöltjeként indul a calabriai tartományi választásokon.
