 A közlekedési vétség miatt megállított autóban egy régiségekkel teli dobozra figyeltek fel a rendőrök, amely az Izraeli Régészeti Hatóság (IAA) szakemberei szerint műkincstolvajok illegális ásatásáról származik.
 A régészek szerint a római ellenségek bronztárgyait az i.sz. 132-136-os Bar Kochba-felkelés idején a zsidó felkelők hadizsákmányként szerezték. A kincsek között díszes füstölőket és egy boroskancsót is találtak.
 A bronz füstölőket valószínűleg gazdag római otthonokban vagy templomokban használták. A boroskancsót egy bankettjelenet díszíti, amelyen egy ember egy boroskancsóval hever. A hatóságok lefoglaltak egy díszes háromlábú kőtálat, római agyaglámpákat és több száz az i.sz. 2-3. században vert érmét is.
 Izraelben igen ritkán lelnek ókori bronz tárgyakra, mert ez a fém igen értékesnek számított, és ezért általában megolvasztották és újra felhasználták. Ezért leginkább olyan helyeken bukkannak elő, ahol szándékosan elrejtették azokat, vagy olyan helyeken, ahol a Bar Kochba-felkelés idején bujkáltak.
 Nyomozás indult a régiségekkel utazó három gyanúsított ellen, akik azért hozhatták a készletet Jeruzsálembe, hogy eladják egy műtárgykereskedőnek. A régészek szerint a Bar Kochba-felkelők Ciszjordánia déli részén, Tarqumija határátkelő mellett található egykori rejtekhelyéről lopták el a tárgyakat.
 Ezen a helyszínen ugyanis a közelmúltban illegális ásatásokat figyeltek meg, de nem sikerült elfogniuk a tetteseket. A műkincstolvajok elmenekültek, miután az autóban találtakhoz hasonló ősi leleteket hagytak maguk után.

 A régészek szerint a bronztárgyakat a Bar Kochba-felkelés harcosai zsákmányolhatták, de ők maguk nem használták őket, mivel pogány képeket ábrázolnak, amely sérti a zsidók bálványimádásra vonatkozó tilalmát. Ha a zsidók használni akarták volna, akkor szándékosan tönkretették volna az emberábrázolást.
 A három és fél évig tartó Bar Kochba-lázadás volt az utolsó és a legjelentősebb  zsidó felkelés az idegen uralkodók ellen az ókorban. A lázadók olyannyira felkészültek a harcra, hogy a harmadik századi római történész, Cassius Dio szerint más vidékekről kellett légiókat hozni a felkelés elfojtására. A harcok végére mintegy 50 zsidó erődöt és körülbelül 1000 települést semmisítettek meg, valamint több százezer zsidó vesztette életét.

 A kincset péntek éjjel vittél el a West Sussex megyei kastélyból – számolt be róla a BBC hírportálja. A lopott tárgyak között szerepelnek a koronázási csészék, melyetek Mária királynő (1542-1587) adott a ceremóniamesteri udvari tisztség korabeli viselőjének.
 A kastélyt kedden nyitották újra a látogatók előtt. Szóvivője szerint „felbecsülhetetlen történelmi értéket” képviselnek a hiányzó kincsek. A személyzetet péntek éjjel értesítették a behatolásról, miután megszólalt a betörést jelző riasztó. A tolvajok egy ablakon át jutottak a kastélyba, összetörtek egy üvegszekrényt, és magukkal vitték a tartalmát. A BBC-nek nyilatkozó nyomozó szerint a bűntényhez köthető a közelben megtalált, kiégett négykerék-meghajtású autó.
 Mária királynő rózsafüzére nem anyaga miatt érték, hanem azért, mert a nemzet pótolhatatlan öröksége – magyarázta a kastély szóvivője. „Pénzben jelentős a kár, de az olyan egyedülálló daraboknak, mint Norfolk hercegének kollekciója, történelmi jelentősége elmondhatatlanul nagyobb” – tette hozzá. Az egész nemzet elleni bűntettnek nevezte az esetet a térség parlamenti képviselője, Andrew Griffiths.
 Mária 1542-ben született a Linlithgow-palotában. Apja születése után nem sokkal meghalt, ekkor Skócia királynője lett. 1548-ban azonban Franciaországba vitték, Skóciát ez idő alatt régensek kormányozták. 1561-ben tért vissza a trónra, de hat viharos év után, 24 éves korában lemondásra kényszerítették. Angliába menekült, unokatestvérétől, I. Erzsébet királynőtől kért védelmet. 18 éven át tartották fogva, 44 évesen végezték ki a Fotheringhay-kastélyban 1587-ben.

 Részleteket nem közöltek a tolvajról, csak annyit lehet tudni, hogy két igen értékes festményt vitt el a lezárt múzeumokból. Az egyik Van Gogh: A plébániakert Nuenenben című alkotása, a másik pedig Frans Hals: Két nevető fiú című műve.
 Van Gogh korai éveiből származó festményét tavaly március 30-án vitte el a tolvaj a Singer Laren Múzeumból. Hals alkotását később, tavaly augusztusban lopta a Hofje Van Aerden múzeumból. Utóbbiba legutóbb 2011-ben törtek be, akkor hat hónapig tartott a nyomozás, mire az értékek visszakerültek.
 A műkincsek gyakori célpontok, különösen Van Gogh művei. 1990-ben három festményét is ellopták.
