A munkavállalók érdekeiért tüntettek május elsején szerte a világon, több nagyvárosban ünnepi helyett hangos és dühös demonstrációkat tartottak.
Párizsban meggyújtották az ötkarikát, összevetve az olimpiarendezés költségeit a mindennapok megélhetési nehézségeivel. Szót emeltek a Gázai övezetben élő civilekért is.
A görög fővárosban a tüntetés központi szlogenje ez volt: „Nyolc óra munkát minden szektorban”. Athénban a munkavállalói jogok mellett a magas élelmiszerárak ellen is tiltakoztak. Egy athéni férfi kiemelte, hogy Görögországban az egészségügyi rendszer az az ágazat, amely a leginkább szenved a munkaerőhiánytól, különösen a kórházakba nem jelentkezik elég szakképzett munkavállaló. A privatizáció nem segít az orvos- és ápolóhiányon.
Isztambulban olyan heves volt a május elsejei tüntetés, hogy könnygázzal oszlatták a tömeget a rohamrendőrök. Több demonstrálót letartóztattak, mert a tilalom ellenére a főtéren akarták folytatni a kormányellenes megmozdulást.
A palesztin civileket sújtó humanitárius válság elhúzódása ellen tiltakozók Athénban és Isztambulban is közös kiállást mutattak az amerikai egyetemeken rendezett demonstrációkkal, illetve az ottani diákokkal és oktatókkal.
Szerdán rohamrendőröket vezényeltek a Kaliforniai Egyetemre Los Angelesben, New Yorkban kedden késő este szintén rohamrendőrök ürítették ki a Columbia Egyetem egyik elfoglalt épületét. Az Arizonai Egyetem tucson-i központjánál szintén voltak őrizetbe vételek szerdára virradóra, miután a tüntetők ellenálltak a hatósági felszólításnak.
Los Angelesben azt követően vált feszültté a helyzet, hogy az Izrael ellenes tüntetésen Izrael-párti ellentüntetők jelentek meg, és a két csoport összecsapott. A helyszíni beszámolók szerint a rendőrség az egyetem rektorának kétérésre avatkozott közbe majd két órával azt követően, hogy a két ellentábor összecsapott.
Az athéni május elsejei demonstráció résztvevői szolidaritást mutattak azokkal, akik ellen az Egyesült Államokban tartott tüntetéseken intézkedtek a hatóságok.
