Elpusztult a Fülöp-szigetek nemzeti bélyeggyűjteménye, amikor leégett hétfőre virradóra Manila csaknem százéves, neoklasszikus stílusban épült postapalotája.
A műemlék épület alagsorában éjfél előtt felcsapott lángokat a tűzoltók több mint hétórás megfeszített munkával tudták megfékezni hétfő reggelre. A tűz és a füst miatt hét személy, köztük több tűzoltó sérült meg könnyebben.
A postahivatal a tűz keletkezésekor zárva volt. A nagyforgalmú épületben működött az ország fő postai elosztóközpontja, valamint a Fülöp-szigeteki postaszolgálat központi irodája.
A hatóságok vizsgálatot indítottak a tűz keletkezésének megállapítására, továbbá a károk felmérésére.
A posta illetékesei szerint az alagsorban, ahol a tűz kezdődött, sok papírt tároltak, és az épület szerkezetében is sok a faanyag. Hozzátették: a posta nem volt felszerelve tűzvédelmi vízelárasztó rendszerrel.
Luis Carlos, a posta főigazgatója a károk között említette, hogy elégtek az ott tárolt bélyegek is, közöttük az ország régi- és emlékbélyegeinek gyűjteménye.
A hivatal műemlék épülete 1926-ban épült hagyományos neoklasszikus stílusban. A II. világháborúban megrongálódott, de 1946-ban újjáépítették.
