A kiszivárgott katonai dokumentumban mindenesetre az szerepel, hogy a baleset szeptember 29-én a Krím partjainál következett be majdnem.
A brit védelmi miniszter, Ben Wallace októberben beszámolt az incidensről a parlament előtt, ahol arról beszélt, egy orosz vadászgép „rakétát bocsátott ki” a Fekete-tenger feletti nemzetközi légtérben járőröző, fegyvertelen brit kémrepülőgép közelében.
Wallace akkor azt mondta, hogy az Egyesült Királyság nem tekinti az esetet szándékos eszkalációnak, hanem műszaki hiba miatt történt. Moszkvát is azzal vádolta, hogy meggondolatlanul cselekedett.
Ehhez képest a kiszivárgott Pentagon-dokumentumban úgy fogalmaznak, majdnem lelőtték az RC-135-ös felderítőgépet. A jelentés szerint az incidens jelentősebb volt, mint azt korábban nyilvánosságra hozták, és közvetlenül bevonhatta volna az Egyesült Államokat és a NATO-szövetségeseket az ukrajnai háborúba – írta a Post. A NATO-szerződés 5. cikke szerint ugyanis az egyik tag elleni fegyveres támadás a szövetség egésze elleni támadásnak minősül.
Amerikai védelmi tisztviselők nem kommentálták a kiszivárgott dokumentum tartalmát, ahogyan a washingtoni brit nagykövetség sem. Oroszország nem reagált a kommentárra vonatkozó megkeresésre.
A dokumentum egyébként több más esetet is részletez, ahol orosz repülőgépek és amerikai, brit és francia repülőgépek október és február közötti felderítő repüléseken találkoztak.
