Egyre fokozódik az aggodalom egy északkelet-amerikai régióban, New Englandben (Új-Anglia) miután három hónapon belül immár a tizenharmadik holttest került elő – jellemzően erdős, elhagyatott vagy víz közeli területeken.
A legutóbbi áldozat egy fiatal nő, akinek testét egy járókelő találta meg a fővárostól délre fekvő település szélén. A hatóságok első tájékoztatása szerint nem találtak külsérelmi nyomokat, a halál okát azonban továbbra is vizsgálják.
Az eset illeszkedik abba a nyugtalanító mintázatba, amely a tavasz eleje óta formálódik a régióban. A hatóságok különálló ügyként kezelik azokat a rejtélyes haláleseteket, amelyek során különböző életkorú és hátterű emberek holttestét találták meg változatos körülmények között – némelyeket vízparton, másokat csomagolva, vagy egyszerűen csak a természetben hátrahagyva.
A hivatalos indoklás szerint nincs egyértelmű kriminalisztikai kapcsolat az esetek között, ezért nem indokolt közös nyomozás.
A lakosság egyre kevésbé fogadja el ezt a magyarázatot. Az áldozatok számának növekedése, a halálesetek időbeli közelsége és földrajzi koncentrációja miatt sokan attól tartanak, hogy a régióban egy vagy több sorozatos elkövető tevékenykedik. A közösségi médiában már hosszú ideje tartanak a találgatások, és a hozzátartozók is egyre hangosabban követelik a választ – közölte a New York Post.
A legutóbbi áldozat egyik hozzátartozója egy televíziós nyilatkozatban úgy fogalmazott: „Csak az igazságot szeretném tudni arról, hogy mi történt vele. Nem vádolok senkit, de a körülményei gyanúsak. Kivel volt, amikor meghalt, vagy előtte? A családom csak azt akarja, hogy feltárják a halálához vezető eseményeket”.
A megtalálás helyszínén később megemlékezést tartottak, ahol családtagok és ismerősök mécseseket gyújtottak, virágokat helyeztek el, és csendben búcsúztak.
