 A környék régóta komoly vitákat generál az ott élők körében. Az iraki erők még 2017-ben vették vissza a kirkuki olajmezők feletti irányítást a kurdoktól. Korábban a kurdok foglalták ezt a területet, miután az iraki kormány összeomlott és az Iszlám Állam terroristái vették át az irányítást a régióban.
 Egyelőre nem tudni, hogy milyen következményei lesznek a mostani lépésnek.

 Az iraki olajipari minisztérium közlése szerint az NOC állami olajvállalat tulajdonában lévő, Kirkúktól húsz kilométerre délnyugatra található Habbáz olajmezőt ért terrortámadásnak nincs áldozata. A robbanások lángra borították a kutakat, a tüzet még nem sikerült eloltani. Az incidens miatt nem állt le a termelés az olajmezőn. Husszein al-Obeidi, a város rendőrparancsnoka az EFE spanyol hírügynökségnek adott interjújában az Iszlám Államot nevezte meg elkövetőként. Az olajmezőn körülbelül húszezer hordónyi olajat termelnek ki naponta.
 Jóllehet az iraki biztonsági helyzet jelentős mértékben javult, amióta a Szíria és Irak egy részét megszálló Iszlám Állam vereséget szenvedett 2017-ben, Irak nehezen megközelíthető részein még mindig aktívak a szervezethez tartozó fegyveresek kisebb csoportjai, és az elmúlt években több merényletet követtek el a biztonsági erők tagjai, valamint civilek ellen. A múlt hónapban is ez a terrorszervezet jelentkezett egy észak-iraki olajfinomító elleni rakétatámadás elkövetőjeként.
