A The Guardian közölte, ez azt követően történt, hogy egy 21 éves fiú körülbelül 70 ezer cikket töltött le a „fehérek uralmáról”, valamint bombák elkészítéséről szóló utasításokat. Ben John levelet írt, amelyben agresszíven szólalt fel az LMBTQ, a migránsok és a liberálisok ellen.
A brit törvények értelmében a terrorcselekmény előkészítése során hasznos információ tárolásáért maximum 11 év börtönt szabható ki. Az ügy iratai áttekintését követően a bíró úgy ítélte meg, hogy a bűncselekmény a „tinédzser ostobaság”.
„Magányos ember vagy, akinek kevés, ha egyáltalán van igazi barátja” – mondta a bíró, aki szerint „John nagyon könnyen befolyásolható mások által, de nem valószínű, hogy bárkinek ártana”. Hogy elkerülje a hosszú letartóztatást, a brit fiúnak Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy és más klasszikusok műveit kell elolvasnia.
„Január 4-én elmondja nekem, hogy mit olvasott, én pedig leellenőrzöm. Tesztelni fogom önt, és ha úgy döntök, hogy hazudik nekem, akkor büntetést fog kapni” – jelentette ki a bíró.
A bíróság két év felfüggesztett börtönbüntetésre ítélte Ben Johnt. Ha férfi nem felel meg a feltételeknek, akkor ezt az időt a rácsok mögött kell töltenie.
