Az Országos Kockázatvédelmi Hálózat helyszínen dolgozó csapatainak közlése szerint legkevesebb 14 halálos áldozata volt a bányaomlásnak. A holttesteket a bánya három különböző aknájában találták meg, a mentési munkálatok folytatódnak – fűzték hozzá.
„A munkálatok első lépése, hogy az összes aknából kiszivattyúzzuk a vizet, hogy csökkentsük a vízszintet, aztán eldöntjük a mentés további menetét” – írták a mentés irányítói a közösségi médiában.
A Caracastól több mint 800 kilométerre délkeletre fekvő El Callao az Orinoco-medence aranyban, gyémántban és koltánban gazdag bányavidékén található, ahol bányászok ezrei dolgoznak megfelelő biztonsági körülmények és érdemi állami felügyelet nélkül.
A mintegy 30 ezer lakosú El Callao megélhetését főként az aranybányászat nyújtja.
