Bár a bírósági iratok nem említik, az amerikai autópálya-felügyelet, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) helyszínelői a baleset idején megállapították, hogy a vezetőtámogató rendszer működött az ütközés során.
A Tesla megtévesztő módon kommunikál az általuk gyártott autók önvezetéséről, az Autopilot nevű funkció a neve ellenére igazából csupán 2-es szintű önvezetésnek tekinthető, ami csak részben automatizálja a jármű kulcsfontosságú funkcióit.
2-es szintű önvezető autónak számít minden olyan jármű, amiben sávtartó asszisztens és adaptív tempomat található, azonban a sofőrnek vezetés közben folyamatosan a kormányon kell tartania a kezét, hogy vészhelyzet esetén be tudjon avatkozni.
Az elengedett kormánnyal való közlekedéshez már legalább 3-as szintű önvezetésre van szükség: a Mercedes EQS modellje nemrég meg is kapta az engedélyt, hogy a tulajdonosok elengedett kormánnyal közlekedjenek vele a német autópályákon, de maximum 60 km/h sebességgel – írta a lap.
