Több orosz tengerészgyalogos meghalhatott egy baleset következtében pár hete. Az eset még november 3-án történt, amikor a katonák ebédszünetük alatt tüzet gyújtottak a Rosztovi területen lévő Kuzmin katonai gyakorlótéren – jelentette egy orosz helyi hírportál a bűnüldöző szervek, az orosz hadseregnél és egy nyomozó ügynökségnél dolgozó forrásaira hivatkozva.
A Newsweek szemléje szerint a tengerészgyalogosok állítólag akkor haltak meg, amikor egy lőszer (vélhetően tüzérségi lövedék) véletlenül a tűzbe gurult, és felrobbant.
Nyolc tengerészgyalogos állítólag azonnal meghalt. Négyen, akik kezdetben túlélték a robbanást, később a kórházban haltak meg, nyolc további ember pedig megsebesült a robbanásban.
A tengerészgyalogosok a jelentések szerint mindannyian az oroszországi Távol-Keleten található Vlagyivosztok kikötővárosból érkeztek.
A Newsweek nem tudta függetlenül ellenőrizni a jelentést, és e-mailben megkereste az orosz védelmi minisztériumot, hogy kommentálják azt, de a Kreml egyelőre hallgat az ügyről.
