Szökött orrszarvú tiport halálra egy férfit Indiában, az áldozat próbált elfutni, de esélye sem volt.
Egy vadvédelmi területről megszökött, csaknem két tonnás orrszarvú gázolt halálra egy motoros férfit Indiában. A szerencsétlenül járt 37 éves férfi megállt az úton, amikor meglátta az állatot, eldobta a motort, és egy töltésen lefutott. Az állat azonban utána eredt, utolérte, és egy mezőn halálra taposta a férfit.
A környékbeliek, akik látták az esetet, próbálták elijeszteni az állatot, de nem jártak sikerrel. Az orrszarvú a Pobitora vadvédelmi területről szökött meg és egy híd közelében támadta meg a férfit. Az ügyben nyomozás indult ‒ írja a Mirror.
Ugyancsak tragédiával zárult egy orrszarvú támadás egy éve Ausztriában, ott egy állatkerti gondozó halt meg, egy másik megsebesült, Indiában pedig egy turistákat szállító autót borítottak fel az orrszarvúk.

Összesen 105 év börtönbüntetésre ítéltek három orvvadászt a Dél-Afrikai Köztársaságban. Két mozambiki állampolgárt és egy dél-afrikai lakost azért ítélték el, mert megöltek három orrszarvút a Kruger Nemzeti Parkban. A három férfit még 2017-ben tartóztatták le.
„Ezeknek az ítéleteknek elrettentőnek kell lenniük azok számára, akik idejönnek és megölik nemzeti örökségünket és megsemmisítik népünk megélhetésének forrásait” – közölte pénteken Gareth Coleman, a nemzeti park vezérigazgatója. Hozzátette, hogy folytatni fogják a nemzeti parkok biztonságának megerősítést szerte az országban. „Az elmúlt hónapokban fokoztuk erőfeszítéseinket a biztonság megteremtésére a parkban, aminek jó hatása van… Ezek az ítéletek ösztönözni fogják csoportjainkat, amelyek fáradhatatlanul dolgoznak a flóra és a fauna védelme érdekében” – hangoztatta.
A Dél-Afrikai Köztársaságban 2020-ban 394 orrszarvú vált vadorzók áldozatává, 30 százalékkal kevesebb, mint az előző évben. Ez volt a legalacsonyabb mutató 2011 óta. Az ország nagyjából 16 ezer orrszarvúnak ad otthont. Az orvvadászat és az északkeleti régiót sújtó aszály súlyosan érinti az orrszarvúpopulációt. A Kruger Nemzeti Parkban élő rinocéroszok száma csaknem kétharmaddal csökkent az elmúlt évtizedben: 2019-ben nagyjából 3800, míg 2008-ban még 11 800 egyed élt a parkban.

Creecey környezetvédelmi miniszter szombaton, a vadőrök világnapján közölte, hogy újra aktivizálódtak a Dél-afrikai Köztársaságban a vadorzók, akik 249 orrszarvút ejtettek el a tülkükért 2021 első felében, egyharmadával többet, mint a koronavírus-járvány sújtotta 2020 hasonló időszakában.
A vadorzás mindazonáltal még nem érte el a járvány előtti szintjét: 2019 első felében 318 orrszarvú esett vadorzók áldozatául.
A kihalás fenyegette rinocéroszok több mint felét, 132-t az ország legnagyobb nemzeti parkjában, a Kruger Nemzeti Parkban ölték meg. A Krugerben összesen 715, vadállatok elleni támadást észleltek, 4 százalékkal többet, mint az előző év hasonló időszakában. Országszerte 125 embert tartóztattak le vadorzásért vagy orrszarvútülök csempészéséért.
A Kruger a kontinens egyik legnagyobb nemzeti parkja, Dél-Afrika egyik legjelentősebb idegenforgalmi látványossága és természetvédelmi területe. A rezervátumot 1898-ban alapította Paul Kruger akkori elnök. Jelenlegi nevét 1926 óta viseli.
A világ orrszarvúinak 80 százaléka Dél-Afrikában él. A világnap alkalmából a környezetvédelmi miniszter hangsúlyozta, hogy a vadorzás ellen és a vadállomány védelmében folytatott küzdelem frontvonalában a vadőrök harcolnak, akik „nap mint nap az életüket kockáztatják”.
A Kruger Nemzeti Park történetében első ízben május 1. óta egy nő, Cathy Dreyer vezeti a vadőrök csapatát.
