A hatóságok tájékoztatása szerint a mentőalakulatok jelenleg is egy öttagú család – köztük három gyermek – után kutatnak az épület romjai között. A török sajtó értesülései szerint az omlás oka egyelőre nem ismert, a mentés folyamatosan zajlik.
Kocaeli tartomány kormányzója elmondta, hogy a mentőalakulatok hangokat hallottak a törmelék alól, és folyamatosan próbálnak eljutni a romok alatt rekedt túlélőkhöz. A török katasztrófavédelmi hivatal (AFAD) csapatai jelenleg is a helyszínen dolgoznak – írja a hirado.hu.
A baleset idején az épület többi lakója nem tartózkodott otthon, mivel az állami ünnep miatt elutaztak, az alsó két szintet elfoglaló gyógyszertár pedig a korai időpontban még nem nyitott ki – írta az Anadolu állami hírügynökség.
A lakóház 2012-ben épült, és a hatóságok egyelőre nem tudják, mi okozhatta a hirtelen összeomlását. Gebze polgármestere szerint a közelben zajló metróépítés is hozzájárulhatott a szerkezeti károkhoz, de vizsgálják annak lehetőségét is, hogy az eset összefüggésben áll-e a nyugat-törökországi Balikesir tartományban hétfőn történt, 6,1-es erősségű földrengéssel.
Gebze az észak-anatóliai törésvonal mentén fekszik, és az 1999-ben történt, több mint 18 ezer ember halálát okozó, 7,6-os erősségű földrengés idején is a legsúlyosabban érintett települések közé tartozott.

Suharyanto, a katasztrófavédelmi hivatal vezetője azonban elmondta: már nem reménykednek abban, hogy további túlélőkre bukkannak. Hozzátette: a hatóságok továbbra sem tudják, hogy pontosan hányan lehetnek a romok alatt, mert azt csak hozzávetőlegesen tudták megállapítani az iskolalátogatási adatok és a családoktól kapott tájékoztatás alapján.
„Nagyon reméljük, hogy nincs 59 ember a romok alatt” – mondta az alapján, hogy ennyire becsülik a számukat, de kiderült, hogy néhány esetben a szülők tévesen hitték, hogy az ő gyerekük is az eltűntek között van. A katasztrófavédelem szerint az épület azért dőlt össze, mert engedély nélkül akarták két újabb emelettel bővíteni, amelynek a súlyát a falak nem bírták el. Az épületben éppen imádkoztak a 12-19 éves fiúk, mikor rájuk szakadtak a fölső szintek. A lányok az iskola egy másik szárnyában voltak, ahonnan ki tudtak menekülni.
Sidoarjo városában, Indonéziában összeomlott az Al Khoziny nevű iszlám internátus iskola épülete, miközben a diákok délutáni imájukat végezték. Egy 13 éves fiú életét vesztette, további 99 diák sérült meg, közülük néhányan súlyos állapotban vannak – számol be a South China Morning Post.
A hatóságok szerint még akár 65, 12–17 éves diák rekedhet a betonromok alatt. A mentőcsapatok több mint 12 órán keresztül próbáltak eljutni a beszorult gyerekekhez, miközben oxigént és vizet juttattak hozzájuk. Éjszaka nyolc diákot sikerült kimenteni, de a romok alatt már holttesteket is találtak, ezért az áldozatok száma várhatóan nőni fog.
A mentési munkálatokat átmenetileg fel kellett függeszteni az esetleges további omlás veszélye miatt. Az iskola környékén és a kórházaknál a diákok családtagjai gyülekeztek, sokan kétségbeesetten várják híreket gyermekeikről.
Odessza megyében, a Pogyilszki járásban található Szlobidszka község egyik településén tragikus baleset történt: egy elhagyatott épület fala leomlott, amikor két testvér – egy 4 és egy 7 éves kisfiú – a közelében játszott. A baleset következtében a fiatalabb gyermek a romok alatt életét vesztette, bátyját pedig sérülésekkel kórházba szállították – közölte a rendőrség május 8-án.
A helyszínen rendőrök és katasztrófavédelmi szakemberek dolgoznak a baleset körülményeinek tisztázásán.

A jelentések szerint nyolc ember elhunyt, többen pedig megsérültek, amikor egy újonnan épült fal összeomlott egy indiai templomban. Egy 6 méter hosszú falszakasz omlott össze, mely többeket maga alá temetett.

A balesetet követően a helyszínre riasztott tűzoltók azonnal hozzáláttak, hogy túlélők után kutassanak a törmelékek között.
Az egyiptomi egészségügyi minisztérium közlése szerint a sérültek ellátására 12 mentőautó sietett a helyszínre, a környékbeli kórházak pedig fokozott készültséggel várják az ellátásra szorulókat.
Mohamed al-Serif, Alexandria kormányzója az al-Ahram állami hírlapnak adott nyilatkozatában elmondta, hogy a többnyire nyaralókat elszállásoló épület összeomlása előtt egy „függőleges törésvonal” futott végig az épületen.
