Egy ember meghalt, nyolc pedig megsérült, közülük ketten súlyosan, amikor vasárnap összeomlott egy lakóépület Isztambulban – közölték a helyi hatóságok.
A török médiában bemutatott képek tanúsága szerint a nagyváros európai részén, Kücükcekmecében lévő háromemeletes épület vasárnap reggel teljesen összeomlott, kilenc embert rejtve a romok alá.
A helyszínre küldött mentőcsapatok egy ember holttestére bukkantak a romok alatt, míg nyolc embert sikerült élve kiemelni és kórházba szállítani.
Mehmet Özhaseki török környezetvédelmi és várostervezési miniszter az X közösségi oldalon azt írta: „egy előzetes vizsgálat alapján megállapítottuk, hogy az épületet 1988-ban építették az előírások betartása nélkül, a cementhez tengeri homokot használtak”. Később még másfél emeletet építettek rá engedély nélkül, ami tovább rontotta az épület statikáját – tette hozzá a tárcavezető.
Az épület törmelékei megrongálták a közelben parkoló autókat és egy autóbuszt, amely az összeomlás idején az utcán haladt.
Isztambul olyan szeizmikus zónában fekszik, ahol akár 7,6-os erősségű földrengések is lehetnek, és a szakértők szerint több százezer olyan épület található a területen, amelyek veszélyben vannak, mert a szabványok betartása nélkül épültek.

Részben összeomlott egy hétemeletes bérház New Yorkban. Szemtanúk beszámolói szerint a Bronx városrészben található épületet hétfő délután egy robbanásra emlékeztető hang rázta meg.
Nem sokkal később az épület sarka az utcára omlott, láthatóvá téve számos lakás és iroda belsejét. A New York-i tűzoltóság egész éjjel túlélők után kutatott a romok alatt.
A hatóságok szerint csodával határos módon csak két könnyebb sérültet találtak a helyszínen.
A The New York Times értesülései szerint az épületet korábban már omlásveszélyesnek nyilvánították, a tulajdonosát pedig megbírságolták.
