A tűzhányó helyi idő szerint hajnali három órakor tört ki, mintegy 1,3 kilométeres körzetben lövellve ki izzó köveket. A kráterből felszálló füst kétszáz méterre magasodik a hegycsúcs felett.

Szuvanosze Japán legdélibb partjainál fekszik, és a Kagosima prefektúrához tartozik. A kis szigetnek mindössze 49 lakója van. A föléje tornyosuló, 799 méter magas Otake vulkán utoljára 2009-ben tört ki.
