Az amerikai vámosok őrizetbe vették a férfit, aki így próbálta az országba csempészni a védett fajhoz tartozó mexikói aratingákat – írja a The Washington Post a Kaliforniai Déli Kerület ügyészségére hivatkozva.
A 35 éves Jesse Martinez, aki mexikói lakos és amerikai állampolgár, a madarakat az alsóneműjében rejtette el. A határőröknek feltűnt a szokatlan dudor a nadrágjában. Kérdésükre Martinez azt állította, hogy „csak a nemi szerve az”, ám az ellenőrzés gyorsan bebizonyította ennek ellenkezőjét.
Az alsónadrágjában két papagájt találtak, barna zsákokba csomagolva. A madarak éltek, nyugtató hatása alatt voltak, és azonnal megkapták az állatorvosi ellátást. Később az amerikai Mezőgazdasági Minisztériumnak adták át őket.
A hatóságok szerint Martinez korábban is foglalkozott madárcsempészettel. Most hivatalos vádat emeltek ellene. Bűnösség esetén akár 20 év börtön és 250 ezer dolláros bírság is várhat rá.
