Az erőszak a térségben augusztusban kezdődött, amikor „illegális bányászok” megtámadtak egy földtulajdonost a Porgera-völgyben, ahol a csendes-óceáni ország egyik legnagyobb aranylelőhelye található – közölték a hatóságok.
Joseph Tondop területi rendőrparancsnok tájékoztatása szerint a helyzet rendezésére tett közvetítési kísérletek kudarcot vallottak, és a konfliktus heves törzsi harcokká fajult, csak vasárnap mintegy 300 lövést adtak le. A rivális klánok harminc férfit megöltek, több száz nőnek és gyermeknek el kellett hagynia otthonát, és sok ház porig égett. Több mint 2000 embert temetett maga alá egy hatalmas földcsuszamlás Pápua Új-Guinea északi részén – közölte az ország katasztrófavédelmi hivatala.
A heves esőzések okozta földcsuszamlások Pápua Új-Guineában pénteken hajnalban mintegy 2000 embert és több mint ezer házat temetett maga alá. A Sky News szerint Pápua Új-Guinea nemzetközi segítséget kért.
Az érintett területről körülbelül 4000 embert telepítettek ki, azonban a helyi hatóságok szerint a földcsuszamlás helyszínének közelében élő közel 7900 ember is továbbra is veszélyben van, mivel a sziklák és törmelékek még mindig mozgásban vannak.
Lehetséges evakuálás miatt riasztás van érvényben az érintett tartományban. A mentők szerint egyre kisebb a valószínűsége, hogy az áldozatokat élve találják meg a romok alatt.

A falusiak a gépek mellett nagyrészt lapátokkal, botokkal és puszta kézzel próbálják eltávolítani a hatalmas sziklákat és törmelékeket. A terep továbbra is veszélyes, mivel a sziklák folyamatosan zuhannak lefelé a hegyoldalban.
„A földcsuszamlás hatásterülete fokozatosan növekszik” – mondta el egy helyi tisztviselő.
Egyre nagyobb aggodalomra ad okot a fertőzés és a betegségek kockázata is a térségben, mivel a romok alatt rekedt holttestek tömege bomlásnak indult.
Az ENSZ arra figyelmeztetett, hogy a romok alatt áramlatok folynak lefelé a domboldalon.
„A víz, amely a föld és a törmelék között van, elkezdett lefelé folyni és a holttestek elkezdtek bomlani” – mondta az ENSZ migrációs ügynökségének illetékese, Serhan Aktoprak kedden a BBC-nek.
A segélyszervezetek jelenleg a helyieket próbálják meg ellátni élelmiszerrel, vízzel és higiéniai készletekkel. Azonban problémát okoz az is, hogy a faluba vezető autópálya elzáródott és megsérült a földcsuszamlás miatt.
Kedden azt jelentették, hogy a földcsuszamlási területtől délre, Hagen és Wabeg tartomány központját összekötő híd is összeomlott, megnehezítve a segélyszállítmányozást.
Ausztrália ígéretet tett a szállítmányok légi szállítására, amely várhatóan szerdán érkezik meg.

A helyi sajtó szombaton azt közölte, hogy több mint 300 embert temetett maga alá a földcsuszamlás.
A ritkán lakott területet az ország északi részén a katasztrófa elzárta a külvilágtól, az utak járhatatlanná váltak.

Christopher Tamari, Kelet-Sepik tartományi rendőrparancsnok az AFP francia hírügynökségnek öt halottról számolt, de mint mondta, a halálos áldozatok száma „magasabb” is lehet.
A tartomány kormányzója, Allan Bird közölte, hogy „mintegy ezer ház semmisült meg”. Hozzátette, a katasztrófavédelmi szolgálatok egyelőre még csupán a rengések következményeinek felmérésénél tartanak; a rengések a tartományban szinte mindenütt „károkat okoztak”.
A Sepik folyó partján fekvő falvak tucatjait már a vasárnap kora reggeli földrengés idején jelentős áradások sújtották. A rengés után készült fotókon a térdig érő vízbe roskadó faházak látszottak.
Pápua Új-Guineában gyakoriak a földrengések, amely a Tűzgyűrűn, a Délkelet-Ázsiától a Csendes-óceánig húzódó, intenzív tektonikus aktivitású övezetben fekszik. Bár a földmozgások általában csak korlátozott károkat okoznak a ritkán lakott őserdei hegyvidéken, pusztító erejű földcsuszamlások keletkezhetnek.
Az ország kilencmillió lakosa közül sokan a nagyobb városokon kívül élnek, ahol a domborzat és a biztonságos utak hiánya megnehezíti a keresést.

Mathew Moihoi, Port Moresby geofizikai intézetének igazgatóhelyettese azt mondta, több épület megrongálódott, a katasztrófavédelem egyelőre nem tud áldozatokról, a vizsgálat folyik. A rengés epicentrumát az ország nehezen megközelíthető térségében mérték, így a munkálatok akár napokig eltarthatnak – tette hozzá.
A Hawaiin működő amerikai cunami-előrejelző központ azt közölte, nem áll fenn szökőár veszélye. A földrengést a Chambri-tónál észlelték hajnalban, az amerikai földtani intézet (USGS) mérései szerint 62 kilométeres mélységben.
Az ilyen mélységű földrengések rendszerint csak kisebb károkat okoznak a felszínen. Pápua Új-Guinea az úgynevezett csendes-óceáni tűzgyűrűn fekszik, ahol különösen gyakoriak a földrengések.

Landolás után szeparatista fegyveresek felgyújtottak kedden egy kisrepülőgépet az indonéziai Pápua tartományában, a pilótát elrabolták – derült ki a Szabad Pápua Mozgalom szakadár szervezet katonai szárnya, a Nyugat-Pápua Nemzeti Felszabadítási Hadsereg (TPNPB) által a sajtóhoz eljuttatott közleményből.
A lázadók kijelentették, nem engedik szabadon az új-zélandi állampolgárságú pilótát, ameddig az indonéziai kormány el nem ismeri Nyugat-Pápua függetlenségét.
A tartomány rendőrségének szóvivője, Ignatius Benny Adi Prabowo azt közölte, a Pilatus PC-6 típusú kisgépen lévő öt utas is eltűnt.
A vizsgálatot megkezdték, a kutatásban katonák is segítenek – tette hozzá.
Herman Taryaman a hadsereg Nyugat-Pápuán állomásozó egységei részéről azt mondta, egyelőre nem tudni, hogy a Philip Mertens néven azonosított pilótával együtt az utasokat is elrabolták-e.
Bár a TPNPB róluk nem tett említést, Muhammad Saleh Mustafa, a hadsereg regionális parancsnoka nem zárta ki, hogy őket is elhurcolták.
A kisgépet a Susi Air magánlégitársaság üzemelteti, melynek alapítója és tulajdonosa Indonézia korábbi halászati minisztere, Susi Pudjiastuti a Twitteren azt írta, imádkozik a pilóta és az utasok épségéért.
Pápua és Nyugat-Pápua indonéz tartományok az ásványkincsekben gazdag Új-Guinea sziget nyugati felén terülnek el. A terület korábban holland gyarmat volt, és 1969-ben került indonéz fennhatóság alá egy széles körben bírált ENSZ-referendum nyomán.
Az új-guineai őslakos pápuák közül sokan követelik az Indonézia által bekebelezett területek függetlenné válását, miként független a sziget keleti fele, az ausztrál gyarmati uralom alól 1975-ben felszabadult Pápua Új-Guinea.
Az erőszakcselekmények a térségben 2018 óta szaporodtak, a lázadók egyre súlyosabb, egyre több halálos áldozattal járó támadást hajtanak végre, az ehhez szükséges fegyvereket pedig a többi között a térségben lévő katonai támaszpontok ellen végrehajtott rajtaütéseken szerzik.
Az indonéz kormány tavaly terroristának minősítette a lázadókat.

Erős, 7,6-os földrengés volt Pápua Új-Guineában vasárnap, a térségben rövid ideig szökőárriadót is elrendeltek.
Az értesülések szerint a földrengés miatt legalább öt ember halt meg. Kessy Sawang parlamenti képviselő szerint a rengés következtében a hegyvidéki falvakban legalább két halott volt, négy másik ember súlyos sérüléseket szenvedett, őket légi úton kórházba szállították. Jelentősek a károk, és többen a törmelék alatt rekedhettek, egy falut szó szerint kettészakított a földrengés, sokan elvesztették otthonukat – mondta.
A Koranga bányászati vállalat tájékoztatása szerint három vájárt élve betemetett a földrengés.
James Marape kormányfő masszív földmozgásról beszélt, és óvatosságra intette az embereket. Hozzátette, hogy a károk pontos mértéke még nem ismert, de abból indulnak ki, hogy a 2018-as, 150 ember életét követelő rengéshez képest alacsonyabbak lesznek.Az amerikai földtani intézet (USGS) mérése szerint a rengés középpontja körülbelül 60 kilométeres mélységben volt, nem egészen 70 kilométerre az ország keleti részén fekvő Kainantu várostól.
Helyszíni beszámolók szerint a tengerparti Madangban több épületben károk keletkeztek, fennakadások voltak az áramellátásban is. A rengést még a csaknem 500 kilométerre lévő fővárosban, Port Moresbyban is érezni lehetett. Az USGS a rengést követően szökőárveszélyre figyelmeztetett, de a riasztást rövid időn belül visszavonta.
Földrengést jelentettek vasárnap az indonéziai Szumátra szigetének nyugati részéről is, egyelőre nem tudni, a 6,1-es rengésnek vannak-e áldozatai, a hatóságok nem rendeltek el szökőárriadót.
Pápua Új-Guinea és Indonézia az úgynevezett csendes-óceáni tűzgyűrűn fekszik, ahol különösen gyakoriak a földrengések.

Csütörtök reggel kitört a Pápua Új-Guinea északkeleti részén található Ulawun vulkán, személyi sérülésektől nincs hír.
A világ 16 legveszélyesebb vulkánja közé sorolt Ulawun vulkánt a szakemberek külön kutatják a jelentős kockázati tényezők miatt. A kitörést követően 15 percen keresztül áramlott a légkörbe az erőteljes füstfelhő. A hamu alkotta kitörési felhő háromezer méteres magasságban alakult ki, ezért figyelmeztetést küldtek a régióban haladó repülőgépek pilótáinak is. Északnyugat irányába helyenként enyhe hamuhullás volt tapasztalható.
A közel három évvel ezelőtti vulkánkitörés súlyos károkat okozott, több ezer embert kényszerült elhagyni otthonát.

Már négy halálos áldozatota van az újra pusztító ebolavírusnak Guineában – közölte Remy Lamah, a nyugat-afrikai ország egészségügyi minisztere.
A tárcavezető az AFP francia hírügynökségnek elmondta, hogy ezek voltak az első ebolás halálesetek 2ö16 óta.
A négy ember a délkeleti Nzérékoré régióban halt meg.
A miniszter nagyon aggasztónak nevezte a vírus újbóli felbukkanását, hiszen a kór 2013 és 2016 között mintegy kétezerötszáz ember életét követelte Guineában.
A vírust 1976-ban fedezték fel az Ebola folyónál, a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban, ahol néhány napja a betegség újra felütötte fejét és két halálos áldozatot jelentettek.
