Rekordmennyiségű, mintegy 38 tonna lefoglalt kábítószerrel a rakterében érkezett vissza Floridába az amerikai parti őrség járőrhajója hétfőn – jelentették be a Miamihoz közeli Front Lauderdale kikötőjében tartott fogadáson a hatóságok vezetői.

Az Everglades kikötőben lehorgonyzott Hamiton járőrhajó rakteréből több mint 30 tonna kokaint és 7 tonnát meghaladó súlyú bálás marihuánát tettek partra, ami az amerikai hatóságok Karib-tengeren és a Csendes-óceán keleti medencéjében végrehajtott összehangolt több hónapos járőrtevékenységének eredménye.
Adam Chamie, ellentengernagy, az Egyesült Államok Parti Őrségének délkeleti kerületparancsnoka hangsúlyozta, hogy a járőrhajó legénysége két hónapig járta a vizeket és közvetlenül 23 tonnányi kokaint foglalt le, a fennmaradó mennyiséget pedig a drogkereskedelem elleni műveletben részt vevő társhatóságok kerítették kézre.
Elhangzott, hogy a hatósági akcióban az amerikai parti őrség további regionális parancsnokságainak járőrei, valamint az amerikai hadsereg és a belbiztonsági minisztérium alá tartozó egységek vettek részt.
A parancsnok megjegyezte, hogy az Egyesült Államok parti őrségének történetében is rekord a partra szállított kábítószer mennyisége, aminek értéke megközelíti a félmilliárd dollárt (473 millió dollár).
„A mintegy 30 tonna kokain összesen 23 millió potenciálisan halálos adagnak fele meg, ami elegendő lenne Florida állam teljes lakosságának halálát okozni túladagolás formájában” – fogalmazott Adam Chamie ellentengernagy, hozzátéve, hogy a kábítószer-kereskedelem ellen a tengeren végrehajtott beavatkozás a leghatékonyabb eszköz abban, hogy megakadályozzák a drog eljutását az állampolgárok közösségeihez.
