A heves esőzések miatti áradások már csaknem száz ember halálát okozták Szudánban, és ezrek váltak hajléktalanná. A Nílus rendszeresen kilép a medréből, és a gazdálkodóknak szükségük is van az áradó vízre, hogy termékeny legyen a föld, ám idén az áradások rendkívüli méreteket öltöttek – számolt be róla a BBC News kedden.
Marc Maillot régész elmondta, hogy a korábbi áradások nem érintették a szudáni piramisok régészeti helyszínét. Jelenleg még képesek a vizet távol tartani a romoktól, de sürgős intézkedésekre van szükség ahhoz, hogy ha a helyzet rosszabbra fordul, megóvják a történelmi örökséget.
A régészeti helyszínen piramisok, templomok, temetők és más történelmi jelentőségű emlékhelyek vannak.
Az UNESCO világörökségi helyszíneinek listáján szereplő Meroé, amely az ősi Kusita királyság központja volt, mintegy 500 méterre fekszik a Nílustól. A régészeti helyszín, amely a fővárostól, Kartumtól 200 kilométerre északkeletre található, több száz történelmi emléket őriz.
