Az Index korábban többször beszámolt róla, hogy a dél-amerikai országban már több mint egy hónapja forradalmi események követik egymást, ami egy országos sztrájkból fajult erőszakhullámá.
A hivatalos adatok szerint pénteken újabb négy ember halt meg, ezzel legkevesebb negyvenhat ember vesztette életét április vége óta a zavargásokban.
Azonban a sztrájkbizottság szerint a halottak számamár ötven fölött van, és több mint ötszázan eltűntek. A védelmi minisztérium szerint eddig mintegy ezerhétszázan sérültek meg, köztük a biyottsági erők több mint kilencszáz tagja.
Az események leginkább Valle del Cauca tartomány fővárosában, Caliban váltak kezelhetetlenné, ezért is rendelt el Clara Luz Roldan, a tartomány kormányzója kijárási tilalmat a városban.
Eredetileg békés tüntetések egy adóreform ellen irányultak, amelyet azóta visszavontak, ám az azóta az erőszak napról-napra csak fokózódik.
A tüntetők találtak maguknak újabb „témákat”, mint például a tervezett egészségügyi reform, illetve akormány és gerillák közötti megállapodás, melyet 2016-ban egy békemegállapodás zárt le. Az ötven évig tartó konfliktusban a hivatalos becslések szerint több mint kétszázhatvanezren haltak meg, hatvanezren sebesültek meg és 6,9 millióan menekültek el otthonukból.
