Letartóztatták Steve Bannont, Donald Trump amerikai elnök egykori belpolitikai tanácsadóját, csalás megalapozott gyanúja miatt vádat is emeltek ellene – jelentette az amerikai közszolgálati rádió (NPR). 



Bannon és három másik ember ellen interneten elkövetett pénzügyi csalás miatt emelt vádat egy New York-i szövetségi kerületi bíróság. Adománygyűjtő akcióval ugyanis mintegy 25 millió dollárt csaltak ki emberektől.



A volt tanácsadó és három társa – Brian Kolfage, Andrew Badolato és Timothy Shea – non-profit szervezetet hozott létre, és Falat építünk címen 2018-ban közösségi finanszírozási kampányt hirdetett az amerikai–mexikói határon építendő fal költségeire. „A gyanúsítottak több százezer adományozót károsítottak meg, és kihasználva a határon építendő fal finanszírozása iránti érdeklődésüket, hamisan azt a látszatot keltették, hogy az adományokat a fal építésére fordítják” – fogalmazott csütörtökön kiadott közleményében Audrey Strauss, New York megbízott kerületi ügyésze. Az összegyűjtött összeget az egyik vádlott, Brian Kolfage által létrehozott bankszámlára gyűjtötték, és egy részét, mintegy 350 ezer dollárt Kolfage – a kezdeményezés kitalálója és elindítója – luxuséletmódjának finanszírozására költötték. A többi pénz hollétéről a nyomozók egyelőre nem nyilatkoztak.









Philip Bartlett, a vizsgálatot vezető nyomozó csütörtökön újságíróknak azt mondta: „a vádlottak nemcsak hazudtak az adományozóknak, hanem hamis számlákkal és bizonylatokkal próbálták meg fedezni bűncselekményeiket, fittyet hányva a törvényességre”. Hozzáfűzte: vád alá helyezésük figyelmeztetés arra, hogy senki nem áll a törvények felett, „sem rokkant háborús veterán, sem milliomos tanácsadó”. 



Bannon bűntársait is őrizetbe vették. Pénzügyi csalás és pénzmosás miatt emeltek vádat ellenük. A bűncselekmények büntetési tételei egyenként akár húsz évig is terjedő börtönbüntetések lehetnek.



Donald Trump a Fehér Házban újságíróknak azt mondta: nem tudott Bannon ügyleteiről, kirúgása óta nem állt kapcsolatban az egykori tanácsadóval.



Steve Bannon a 2016-os elnökválasztás idején Donald Trump kampánymenedzsere volt, majd hét hónapig tanácsadóként dolgozott a Fehér Házban. Az elnök 2017 nyarán bocsátotta el őt.
