A meghibásodás következtében a LUMA Energy energiaelosztó vállalat ügyfeleinek 90 százaléka maradt áram nélkül – olvasható a cég honlapján.
A LUMA az áramkimaradás után kiadott közleményében kiemelte: valószínűleg 24-48 órába telik majd a szolgáltatás helyreállítása. Az áramkimaradás okának felderítésére indított előzetes vizsgálatok egy föld alatti vezeték meghibásodására utalnak – tették hozzá.
Az áramtermelésért felelős Genera vállalat szóvivője, Ivan Baez egy helyi rádióinterjúban „súlyos incidensnek” nevezte a meghibásodást. Elmondása szerint a LUMA üzemeltette a feltételezések szerint meghibásodott vezetéket. Az incidens során a Genera tulajdonában levő erőművek és a magángenerátorok működése is ellehetetlenült – mutatott rá.
Pedro Pierluisi, Puerto Rico kormányzója a közösségi médiában közzétett bejegyzésében közölte: kormánya „válaszokat és megoldásokat követel” a LUMA-tól és a Generától. Meglátása szerint a vállalatoknak „fel kell gyorsítani a helyreállítást, és tájékoztatniuk kell az embereket az összes olyan intézkedésről, amelyeket az egész sziget áramellátásának visszaállítása érdekében tesznek”.
Puerto Rico régóta visszatérő áramkimaradásokkal küzd az infrastruktúra gyakori összeomlása miatt. Az elmúlt 90 év egyik legpusztítóbb hurrikánja, a María 2017-ben csapott le Puerto Ricóra, 90 milliárd dolláros gazdasági veszteséget és hónapokig tartó áramkimaradást okozva a szigetország nagy részén.

A helyi rendőrség közlése szerint 5 ember életét vesztette, 4 másik pedig válságos állapotban van.
Az AP értesülései szerint lövöldözés történt egy Puerto Ricó-i bárban, melynek következtében 5 ember életét vesztette, 4 ember pedig életveszélyes sérüléseket szenvedett. A hatóságok úgy vélik, hogy a hétfő este történt lövöldözésnek a helyi kábítószer-kereskedelemhez lehet köze.
Noha Puerto Rico régóta tranzitállomásként szolgál a Dél-Amerikából érkező, több millió dolláros drogszállítmányok számára, a több áldozatot követelő, kábítószerrel kapcsolatos lövöldözések ritkának számítanak. A hatóságok éppen ezért kongatták meg a vészharangot, ugyanis könnyedén meglehet, hogy a lövöldözést újabb erőszakos cselekmények követik majd.
A rendőrség közleménye szerint ismeretlen fegyveresek egy mozgó autóból nyitottak tüzet az északi Toa Baja városában található bárra. Három férfi és két nő a helyszínen életét vesztette, míg három másik nőt és egy férfi súlyos sérülésekkel kórházba szállítottak. A hatóságok később azt is megosztották, hogy az életveszélyes sérülésekkel kórházba szállított áldozatok között volt Cataño város volt polgármesterének testvére is.

A földrengés a sziget déli vidékein pusztított, epicentruma Guanica városától mintegy húsz kilométernyire délkeletre volt. Az amerikai Földtani Intézet jelentése szerint január eleje óta ez volt a tizenegyedik ilyen erősségű földmozgás Puerto Ricón. A legutóbbi rengések 6,4-es erősségűek voltak.
Tavaly december óta nagyjából ötszázszor mozgott a föld a sziget déli vidékein. Az előző év végi rengéssorozat teljesen tönkretette a térség infrastruktúráját, amelyet a 2017-ben pusztító Maria hurrikán már jelentős mértékben megrongált. Azóta az ott élők jó része menedékhelyeken, átmeneti időre létesített sátorvárosokban húzza meg magát.
