Spanyolok tízezrei vonultak Madrid utcáira szombaton, hogy elítéljék a katalán vezetők és aktivisták jövőbeli amnesztiájáról szóló törvényt, amely lehetővé tette a baloldali kormány számára, hogy újra mandátumot szerezzen. A helyi hatóságok szerint mintegy 170 ezren gyűltek össze a Cibeles téren, a híres, azonos nevű szökőkút körül a spanyol főváros központjában, hogy válaszoljanak a jobboldali tiltakozó felhívásra.

A résztvevők azt skandálták: „Sánchez áruló”, „Sánchez, börtönben!”, avagy „Katalónia Spanyolország”. A demonstrálók spanyol és európai uniós zászlókat lengettek, amelyet az Európai Néppárt terjeszt.



Pedro Sánchez a július 23-i parlamenti választáson a második helyen végzett a jobboldali vezető, Alberto Núnez Feijóo (PP) mögött. Ugyanakkor a 2018 óta hatalmon lévő szocialista miniszterelnöknek, Pedro Sáncheznek sikerült csütörtökön új mandátumot szereznie a parlamentben, miután intenzív tárgyalásokat folytattak a regionalisták támogatásáról, köztük a katalán szeparatista pártokkal.

A Spanyol Szocialista Munkáspárt (PSOE) október végén koalíciós megállapodást kötött a több baloldali pártot tömörítő Sumar formációval. Pedro Sánchezt nyolc parlamenti párt képviselői választották miniszterelnökké, köztük két katalán függetlenségi formáció, a Katalán Köztársasági Baloldal (ERC) és az Együtt Katalóniáért (Junts per Catalunya), amely a katalán szeparatistáknak amnesztiát biztosító jogszabályt szabta támogatásának feltételéül. Ez a feltétel verte ki a spanyoloknál a biztosítékot, és ezért nevezik a szocialista miniszterelnököt hazaárulónak.
