Míg Európa számos országában a csapadékos időjárás miatt áradó folyók vize jelent problémát, addig máshol a szárazság okoz gondokat. Így például Ecuadorban is, ahol a kormány döntése nyomán vasárnap ideiglenesen felfüggesztették a villamos energia szolgáltatást a 24 tartományból 12-ben.
További 19 térségre pedig vörös figyelmeztetést adtak ki, ami azt jelenti, hogy a vízerőműveket meghajtó víz szintje kirtikus szintre csökkent.
Az energiaellátás országos szintű korlátozását már kedden kilátásba helyezte a kormány. Ezt követően a hadsereg egységei megjelentek a Mazár vízerőműnél, hogy biztosítsák az ellátás szempontjából kulcsfontosságú, 170 megawatt kapacitású létesítmény működésének folytonosságát és biztonságát.
Az áramellátásról szóló végső döntést a vészhelyzeti operatív törzs hozta meg szombaton, éjszakába nyúló tanácskozásán.
Az áramszünet helyi idő szerint vasárnap reggel 8 órától 17 óráig tartott, azaz közép európai idő szerint körülbelül hétfő hajnalban ért véget. Kormányzati közlések szerint szóba jöhet további áramszünetek beiktatása is, melyeket elsősorban az éjszakai órákra időzítenének, amikor mérsékeltebb az energia felhasználása. Ez lehetőséget ad arra, hogy a vízerőművekkel visszatöltsék az energiatároló létesítményeket.
Az ecuadori hatóságok közlése szerint áramszünetek nélkül a vízgazdálkodás egyensúlya is végzetesen megborulna. A leállások segítenek megőrizni az ország természetes vízkészleteit.
A környezetvédelmi miniszter, Ines Manzano vasárnap újságíróknak azt nyilatkozta, hogy a vízhiány mellett más okokból is igen komoly a helyzet abban a 19 térségben, amelyekre vörös figyelmeztetést adtak ki. Ezeken a helyeken a szárazság miatt keletkező tüzekkel is szembe kell nézniük a hatóságoknak, valamint gondok vannak az élelmiszerellátás biztosításában is.
Ecuador az elmúlt 61 év legnagyobb szárazságával néz szembe. Ráadásul az energiakrízis csak mélyülhet a kormány szerint, mivel nem sikerül tartani az ütemet az ország folyóira épített gátak és duzzasztók karbantartására, valamint elmaradások vannak új energiatermelő megoldások telepítésében is.
A BBC felidézi: Ecuador energiaellátásának kb. 70 százaléka a vízenergia hasznosításán alapul. Ennek híján gyakorlatilag az ország működése lehetetlenül el.
Mint a beszámoló jelzi: nem csak Ecuadorban súlyos a helyzet, ahol az előrejelzések szerint még jó ideig nem lehet csapadékra számítani. Az andoki ország mellett Kolumbiában 11 ezer hektáron küzdenek a tűzoltók az erdőtüzekkel, míg Peru nemrég 60 napos szükségállapotot hirdetett egyes, Brazíliával és Ecuadorral közös határa menti régiókban az őserdőben pusztító lángok miatt.

Legkevesebb 160 elefánt pusztult el a Zimbabwét sújtó szárazság miatt, és mivel a forró, száraz időjárás folytatódik, a természetvédők attól tartanak, hogy még több állat hullik majd el.
Az elefántok tavaly augusztus és december között pusztultak el a 14 651 négyzetkilométeres Hwange nemzeti parkban, amely az elefántok, bölények, oroszlánok, gepárdok, zsiráfok és más veszélyeztetett fajok otthona.
A közelmúltban legalább hat másik elefántot találtak holtan a parkon kívül, vélhetően orvvadászat miatt.
A zimbabwei parkokért és vadon élő állatokért felelős hatóság (Zimparks) megerősítette a parkban elpusztult elefántok számát és a szárazságnak tulajdonította azt. Tinashe Farawo, a Zimparks szóvivője kedden elmondta: „Vizsgálatokat végeztünk, és az eredmények azt mutatják, hogy éhezés miatt haltak meg. Az elpusztult elefántok többsége idős vagy beteg volt.”
A Hwange parkban 2023-ban február és november között nem esett eső. A meteorológusok szerint október és idén március között erős El Niño időjárási jelenség várható, ami forró, száraz időjárást és kevés csapadékot eredményez.
Az ENSZ Humanitárius Ügyek Koordinációs Hivatala novemberi frissítésében azt írta, hogy ez valószínűleg késleltetett csapadékhullást és elhúzódó szárazságot fog eredményezni, és aszályhoz vezethet Zimbabwéban – írta a Guardian.
Hwange természetvédelmi csoportjai napenergiával működő rendszereket telepítenek a meglévő kutakra, hogy meghosszabbítsák a szivattyúzás idejét.
Az aszályok már korábban is okoztak tömeges elefántpusztulást Zimbabwéban: 2019-ben két hónap alatt több mint 200 állat pusztult el a vízhiány miatt.
A Hwange-ban dolgozó állatorvosok elmondták, hogy az elefántok a park egyik leggyakrabban használt vízvételi pontja körül csoportosan pusztultak el.
Egy szeptemberi számlálás során több mint 1800 elefánt próbált inni egyetlen vízforrásból.
Az aszályos körülmények súlyosbodásával az orvvadászat újbóli fellángolása is fenyegeti a zimbabwei elefántokat és más vadon élő állatokat.
Januárban hat elefánt halálát jegyezték fel Gwayiben, a Hwange parkon kívül, amit a környezetvédelmi jogvédő csoportok az orvvadászatnak tulajdonítanak. A csoportok szerint az elefántok agyarait eltávolították, ami elefántcsont orvvadászatra utal.

A 450 kilogrammos bombát egy halász találta meg – mondta el a Reuters hírügynökségnek Marco Nasi ezredes. A 240 kilogramm robbanóanyagot tartalmazó eszközt a Borgo Virgilio nevű lombardiai falu közelében fedezték fel júliusban.
Mintegy 3000, közelben lakó embernek kellett elhagynia az otthonát, hogy vasárnap ellenőrzött körülmények között felrobbanthassák a bombát.
„Néhány lakos először azt mondta, nem mozdul, de az utolsó napokban sikerült mindenkit meggyőzni” – magyarázta Francesco Apori polgármester.
A Pó a leghosszabb olasz folyó, az Alpokban ered és az Adriai-tengerbe torkollik. A 65 kilométer hosszú folyam jelentős szakaszai száradtak ki az országot sújtó, 70 éve nem tapasztalt aszály alatt. A múlt hónapban veszélyhelyzetet hirdettek a folyómenti területeken a vízhiány miatt. A Pó az olasz mezgazdasági művelés alá vont földek egyharmadát látja el vízzel.
A hőség és a csapadékhiány miatt a folyam áramlása annyira meggyengült, hogy a gazdák szerint a tengerből sós víz szivárog a mederbe, tönkretéve a terményeket.

Lángra kapott a nyári szárazságban egy erdős területen lévő katonai gyakorlótér növényzete a kelet-németországi Gohrischheide közelében. A csütörtök délután óta mintegy 350 hektáron pusztító tűz az erős széllökések miatt több lakott települést is fenyeget a közelben, ezért a drezdai tűzoltóság nagy erőkkel vonult ki a helyszínre, a rendőrség pedig lezárta a környékbeli utakat – számoltak be német hírforrások pénteken.
A drezdai katasztrófavédelmi szolgálat illetékese, Steffen Ludewig a Focus Onlinre-nak azt mondta, hogy a tűz a német hadsereg (Bundeswehr) egyik lőszerekkel teli felvonulási területén keletkezett. A tűzoltóparancsnok szerint az oltási munkálatokat nehezíti, hogy a mintegy 350 hektáron kiterjedt tűz robbanóanyaggal szennyezett területet is érint, s a robbanásveszély miatt elhúzódó oltási munkálatokra kell számítani.
A helyi tűzoltóság mintegy 100 fővel és tucatnyi kocsival vonult ki, de tűzoltó helikoptert, hőkamerákat is bevetettek.
A Tagesspiegel online kiadása péntek délután arról számolt be, hogy a katasztrófevédelem megkezdte a Brandenburg tartomány déli részén található Bad Liebenwerda városka déli negyedében lakók kimenekítésát. Ezen kívül két másik – immár szászországi – település, Gohrischheide és Neuburxdorf környékén is „aktívan figyelik” a fejleményeket. A hatóságok ugyanis attól tartanak, hogy az erős szél további lakott települések felé sodorhatja a lángokat.
Az erdő- és bozóttűz csütörtök délután keletkezett a Gohrischheide melletti katonai gyakorlótéren, azt átmenetileg sikerült megfékezni, majd a szél újra felszította a lángokat. Péntek délután a tűz átterjedt Szászország tartományi határán túl Brandenburgba is.
Németországban is forró hétvégét ígér a meteorológiai szolgálat: a helyi záporok, zivatarok mellett akár 34 Celsius-fok is lehet.

A spanyol és a német tűzoltók vasárnap a szokatlanul erős nyugat-európai hőhullám miatt bekövetkező erdőtüzekkel küzdöttek.
Spanyolországban a legnagyobb károkat az északnyugati Zamora tartományban okozták a tüzek, ahol több mint 25 000 hektárnyi terület pusztult el – közölték a regionális hatóságok, miközben a német hatóságok három Berlin melletti falu lakóit szólították fel, hogy hagyják el otthonaikat egy közelgő erdőtűz miatt.
A spanyol hatóságok közölték, hogy a három napon át tartó magas hőmérséklet, erős szél és alacsony páratartalom után vasárnap reggel némi enyhülés következett be a hőmérséklet csökkenésével. Ez lehetővé tette, hogy mintegy 650 tűzoltó vízszállító repülőgépek támogatásával körülhatárolja a Zamora Sierra de la Culebrában keletkezett tüzet. A hatóságok figyelmeztettek, hogy továbbra is fennáll a veszélye annak, hogy az időjárás kedvezőtlen változása felélesztheti a tüzet, amely miatt 18 települést kellett kiüríteni.
Spanyolországban az ország számos pontján rekord magas hőmérsékletet mértek. A szakértők az éghajlatváltozással hozzák összefüggésbe az Európa számára szokatlanul forró időszakot. A hőmérők a hét folyamán számos spanyol városban 40 Celsius-fok fölé emelkedtek – ez a hőmérséklet általában augusztusban megszokott. Emberi áldozatokról nem érkezett jelentés, de a lángok Zamora és Navarra tartományban is elérték néhány falu határát. Az autók utasai által készített videókon látszott, hogy a lángok az utak szélét nyaldossák.
Navarra középső-északi részén a hatóságok elővigyázatosságból mintegy 15 kis falut evakuáltak, mivel a magas hőmérséklet a térségben várhatóan csak szerdán csökken majd. Katalónia északkeleti részén három helyen is erdőtüzek pusztítottak: Lleidában, Tarragonában és a Barcelonától délre fekvő Garaf egyik természetvédelmi parkjában. A tűzoltók közölték, hogy Lleidában 2700 hektár égett le. Hozzátették, hogy csak Katalóniában az elmúlt héten több mint 200 különböző erdőtűzhöz vonultak ki.
Németországban az erős szél tovább szította a lángokat Berlintől 50 kilométerre délnyugatra, ami arra késztette a hatóságokat, hogy szombaton szükségállapotot hirdessenek. Németországban az elmúlt napokban számos erdőtűz pusztított a nagy hőség és a kevés eső miatt. Az ország nemzeti meteorológiai hivatala szerint a hőmérők vasárnap néhány keleti mérőállomáson 38 Celsius-foknál is többet mértek.

Hogy felhívják a figyelmet a problémáikra, a BBC beszámolója szerint a méhészek 60 kaptárt és mintegy tízezer méhet vittek az elnöki palota elé. A tüntetők egyike arról beszélt a sajtónak, hogy a méhrajok pusztulása nemcsak számukra, de az egész világ számára súlyos csapást jelent.
A Reuters helyszíni beszámolója szerint a tüntetők többek között azt szeretnék, ha a kormány segítene a mézárak szabályozásában, illetve ha támogatást kaphatnának a méztermelők. A mezőgazdasági minisztérium részéről az közölték, hogy osztoznak a méhészek aggodalmában a szárazság miatt, és hónapok óta nyújtanak segélyeket 20, a vízhiány miatt bajba került közösségnek.

Az ENSZ szerint a világ negyedik legnagyobb szigete az éhínség szélén áll – és valószínűleg úgy vonul be a történelembe, mint az első, amelyet a szélsőséges és szokatlan időjárás okoz. És mindezt egy olyan ország szenvedi el, amely nem háborúban vagy konfliktusban áll, hanem békeidőben, és gyakorlatilag nulla szén-dioxid-kibocsátással.
Az éhínség egy kihívást jelentő jogi fogalom, amelynek nemzetközi paraméterei gyakran vitatottak. De hogy Madagaszkárban az éhínség jogilag minősül-e vagy sem, az a madagaszkáriak számára vitatható kérdés, akiknek nagy része a szegénységi küszöb alatt él, és kevesebb mint napi két dollárt keres.
A legtöbben ma este éhesen fekszenek le, és a legtöbben nem fogják tudni, honnan szereznek ételt a következő étkezésükhöz, amikor felébrednek. A legtöbb szülő nem fogja tudni etetni az összes gyermekét – és néhányan egyiküknek sem tudnak majd enni adni. A világ egyik legszegényebb országában kézzel fogható, milyen károkat okoz a szélsőséges időjárás; a riport szerint a szoptató anyák nem tudják táplálni gyermekeiket, mert ők maguk is éheznek.
Az elmúlt 40 év legsúlyosabb aszálya sújtja Madagaszkárt, sokan a kiszáradt folyómedrekben ásnak, hátha ott még találnak vizet, de a vízhiány és a homokviharok miatt még azok sem tudnak élelmet termelni, akiknek van termőföldjük. Az országnak korábban jelentős bevétele volt az idegenforgalomból, de a koronavírus-járvány miatt elmaradtak a turisták, így sokaknál egyszerre veszett el a jövedelem és az élelem is.

Törökország jelentős vízhiány elé néz, mivel 2020. az elmúlt öt év legszárazabb éve volt.
Miután 2019 nyarán és őszén alig esett eső, a tározókban folyamatosan csökkent a víz. A 2020-as év pedig az elmúlt öt év legszárazabb éve volt, július óta szinte az összes tartományban átlag alatti csapadék hullott. Októbertől decemberig 48%-kal kevesebb csapadék hullott az 1981-2010-es átlaghoz képest. 2021 kezdetén pedig már súlyos aszály tapasztalható Törökország nagy részén. Az Isztambul körüli víztározók szintje elérte az elmúlt 15 év legalacsonyabb szintjét.
Az alábbi térkép a talajvíz mennyiségét mutatja percentilisben az 1948-2010. közötti átlaghoz viszonyítva. A kékkel színezett területeken több, a vöröseken kevesebb víz van, mint általában.

A tartós csapadékhiány veszélyezteti a növénytermesztést, az elmúlt félévben már drámaian csökkent a gabonatermés. Száraz időszakokban az ivóvíz és mezőgazdasági területek önözésének fő forrása a talajvíz. Ennek helyreállása viszont hónapokig tarthat egy aszályos időszak után. Becslések szerint a csapadékhiány és jelentős vízfogyasztás néhány hónapon belül Isztambul teljes vízkészletének kifogyását eredményezheti.
Január második fele már csapadékosabb, de a biztonságos vízszint eléréséhez tartós, intenzív esőzésre lenne szükség.

Belgiumot a legutóbbi rekordnak számító 1833-as év tavaszán tapasztalthoz hasonló szárazsági hullám sújtja. Az ilyenkor szokásos 118 milliméterhez képest április és május folyamán 24,4 milliméter csapadék hullott mindössze – közölte pénteken a belga Királyi Meteorológiai Intézet (IRM).
A La Libre Belgique című belga napilap beszámolója szerint Rozemien De Troch, a meteorológiai intézet illetékese elmondta, a két tavaszi hónap közül május volt a szárazabb. Ekkor mindössze 5,4 milliméter csapadék hullott a szokásos 66,5 milliméterhez képest. Megjegyezte, 1833 azonos időszaka még szárazabb volt, akkor 1,4 milliméter csapadék hullott országosan.
A tavaszi időszak gyakran csapadékos időjárásával ellentétben az idén jellemző napsütés – a gyakran hűvös idő ellenére is – rendkívüli aszályt eredményezett.
„Az alacsony relatív páratartalom és a folyamatos napsütés nagyon jelentős párolgást okozott” – mondta. A napilap úgy tudja, több belgiumi településen vízhasználati korlátozást vezettek be.
De Troch kiemelte azt is, hogy a napos órák számát tekintve is kiemelkedő a belga tavasz. Akár már pénteken, vagy szombaton megdőlhet a 2011-es abszolút rekord, amikor májusban 707 óra volt napsütéses órák száma Belgiumban.
