Nem kapcsolták be az olasz Velencét védő Mose zsiliprendszert, ezért a víz elöntötte a Szent Márk teret kedden. A víz bejutott a Szent Márk-székesegyházba is.
„A helyzet drámai. Ha a vízszint tovább növekszik, a székesegyház belsejében lévő kápolnák is víz alá kerülhetnek” – közölték az olasz hatóságok a helyi sajtó híradása szerint.
Luigi Brugnaro velencei polgármester hangsúlyozta, hogy a vízszint a váratlanul erős sirokkószél miatt 145 centiméterre emelkedhet.
Az önkormányzat közlése szerint a zsiliprendszert azért nem kapcsolták be, mert a meteorológusok kedd délelőtt még csak egy 130 centiméter nagyságú árhullámmal számoltak. Az időjárási viszonyok hirtelen romlása viszont készületlenül érte a várost.
A Velencét védő Mose rendszer aktiválását 48 órával előre be kell ütemezni. Az utóbbi napokban a rendszert két alkalommal már bekapcsolták, ami eddig megakadályozta a város víz alá kerülését.
Olaszországban napok óta zord az időjárás. Luca Zaia, Veneto régió vezetője közel félmilliárd eurós károkról számolt be az északkeleti térségben.
Az olasz katasztrófavédelem a legmagasabb fokú riasztást adta ki keddre az ország északkeleti részében, illetve Róma térségében és a fővárostól délre eső vidéken.
