Massachusetts államban tíz települést minősítettek a keleti lóagyvelő-gyulladás (EEE) miatt magas kockázatúnak, amely a fertőzött szúnyog csípése révén terjed, közölték a hatóságok. A Betegség-ellenőrzési és Megelőzési Központok szerint jelenleg nem áll rendelkezésre vakcina vagy gyógyszer a „Triple E” néven is ismert betegség kezelésére – írta meg a BBC.
A közösségeket figyelmeztették, miután a térségben több EEE-s szúnyogot találtak, és 2020 óta ez volt az első olyan eset, hogy ember fertőződött meg az államban ezzel a vírussal. A közegészségügyi tisztviselők szerint a betegséget a massachusettsi Plymouthban diagnosztizálták egy lónál, amely miatt a város EEE-kockázati szintje megemelkedett. Egy 80-as éveiben járó férfi volt az első, aki megfertőződött, és augusztus 16-án diagnosztizálták nála a betegséget.
A massachusettsi közegészségügyi hivatal (CDC) szerint az emberek 33-70 százaléka hal meg a betegségben, ha megfertőződik, és a legtöbb haláleset a tünetek megjelenése után kettő-tíz nappal következik be. A vírus tünetei közé tartozik a hasmenés, láz, fejfájás, görcsrohamok és a hányás − közölte a CDC.
„Az EEE ritka, de súlyos betegség, és közegészségügyi aggodalomra ad okot” − nyilatkozta Robbie Goldstein massachusettsi közegészségügyi biztos. „Szeretnénk emlékeztetni a lakosokat arra, hogy védekezniük kell a szúnyogcsípés ellen, különösen az állam azon területein, ahol EEE-aktivitást tapasztalunk.”
A terjedés megfékezése érdekében a hatóságok légi permetezést hajtanak végre az Anvil 10+10 nevű rovarirtó szerrel. Az állami egészségügyi tisztviselők arra is felhívják az emberek figyelmét, hogy szeptember végéig kerüljék a szabadtéri tevékenységeket az esti órákban.
Massachusettsben nem ez az első járványkitörés − 2019-ben és 2020-ban 17 EEE-megbetegedést és hét halálesetet jelentettek. A betegség nagyon ritka, a CDC szerint évente mindössze 11 esetet jelentenek az Egyesült Államokban.
Állami egészségügyi tisztviselők arra figyelmeztetnek, hogy az EEE mellett Massachusettsben mintegy nyolc településen a nyugat-nílusi vírust hordozó szúnyogok miatt is magas kockázatúnak számítanak. Több mint 30 államból jelentettek nyugat-nílusi eseteket, és a vírussal fertőzöttek között van Anthony Fauci, a Nemzeti Allergia- és Fertőző Betegségek Intézetének korábbi igazgatója is. Otthon lábadozik, miután hat napig kórházban volt.
