Az eset Narában, a Tósódaidzsi templomkomplexumban történt. A fiút egy japán turista kapta rajta, hogy a körmével belekarcolt valamit az aranycsarnok egyik oszlopába. Miután ezt látta, értesítette a templom személyzetét, akik ezután a helyi rendőrséget hívták ki.
A rendőrség közlése szerint a fiú másnap a kihallgatásán azt mondta, nem állt szándékában kárt okozni a japán kultúrának. Hozzátették, hogy a fiú most a szüleivel van, akik vele voltak, amikor az eset történt. A rendőrség folytatja a nyomozást az ügyben, és ha bebizonyosodik, hogy a tinédzser megsértette a kulturális javak védelméről szóló törvényt, akkor az ügyészség akár vádat is emelhet ellene. Őrizetbe azonban nem fogják venni.
A japán törvények szerint akár öt évig terjedő szabadságvesztéssel vagy 300 ezer jen (több mint 700 ezer forint) pénzbírsággal is büntethető az, aki fontos kulturális javakat rongál meg.
„Aggódunk, hogy ugyanez megismétlődhet. Bár lehet, hogy nem rosszindulatból tette, mégis sajnálatos és szomorú ez az eset” – mondta a templom egyik szerzetese a Kyodo News beszámolója szerint.
A 8. században épült Tósódaidzsi egyike annak a nyolc helyszínnek, amelyek az ókori Nara történelmi műemlékeit alkotják, és amelyeket 1998-ban az UNESCO a világörökség részévé nyilvánított. A Kiotótól 45 kilométerre délre fekvő Nara a turisták kedvelt célpontja.
Néhány héttel korábban a római Colosseumot rongálta meg hasonló módon egy turista, aki az „Ivan + Hayley 23” feliratot karistolta kulccsal a kétezer éve épült amfiteátrum falába. Az eset nagy felháborodást váltott ki Olaszországban, még a kulturális miniszter is kiakadt rajta.
