Több mint 300 tibeti vonult utcára Újdelhiben vasárnap a tibetiek Kína elleni felkelésének 65. évfordulóján.
A tibeti zászlót és a dalai láma képét lengető emberek a parlament elé vonultak és a többi között azt skandálták, hogy „Tibet soha nem volt Kína része”, valamint Kína kivonulását követelték Tibetből.
A tüntetést szervező Tibeti Ifjúsági Kongresszus közleményében azt vetette a pekingi vezetés szemére, hogy Tibet kínai ellenőrzése alá kerülése óta már „több mint egymillió, az elnyomás ellen békésen tiltakozó tibeti vesztette életét a kínai hatóságok brutalitása következtében”.
Kína 1950-ben foglalta el a hegyvidéki országot, amely azóta az egyik legnehezebben elérhető és legérzékenyebb terület a régióban. A tibetiek 1959-ben lázadtak fel a kínai fennhatóság ellen, ám a felkelést leverték, a dalai láma pedig Indiába menekült.
Jóllehet Kína a mai napig veszélyes szeparatistaként tekint a buddhista vallási vezetőre, a dalai láma többször leszögezte, hogy elsősorban Tibet autonómiájáért és a helyiek jogainak, vallási hagyományainak tiszteletben tartásáért küzd.
Jogvédő csoportok és a tibetiek a vallás, a nyelv, az oktatás és a munka szigorú ellenőrzésével vádolják Kínát, de Peking tagadja a tibeti nép emberi jogainak megsértését.

A Guardian jelentése szerint egy halálos lavina indult lefelé a tibeti Sisapangma hegy lejtőin, épp akkor, amikor több mint 50 hegymászó igyekezett a csúcsra. A lavina két embert, egy amerikai hegymászót és egy nepáli hegyivezetőt, akik a természeti katasztrófa nyomán életüket vesztették.
A Sisapangma 8027 méteres magasságával a világ 14. legmagasabb csúcsa, s széles körben úgy tartják számon, mint az egyik legkönnyebben megmászható hegyet ebben a magasságban, melyet a hegymászók „nyolcezresek” néven emlegetnek.
A helyi jelentések szerint szombaton két lavina csapott le a lejtőire 7600 és 8000 méteres magasságban, melynek következtében Anna Gutu amerikai hegymászó és nepáli vezetője, Mingmar Sherpa életét vesztette. Úgy tudni, egy másik amerikai hegymászó, Gina Marie Rzucidlo és nepáli vezetője, Tenjen Sherpa is eltűnt.
Tenjen Sherpa volt a norvég Kristin Harila vezetője, amikor júliusban megmászták a K2-t Pakisztánban, hogy a világ leggyorsabb hegymászói legyenek, akik mind a 14 8000 méter feletti csúcsot megmászták.

A kínai hatóságok közlése szerint huszonnyolcra nőtt a tibeti lavina halálos áldozatainak száma. A mentést a péntek délutáni órákban leállították.
A hóomlás kedden este történt egy autópályaalagút kijáratánál, a 3040 méter tengerszint feletti magasságban található Njingcsi közelében. A lavinával több tonna hó és jég zúdult az alagút bejáratára, és sokan rekedtek autójukban.
A helyszínen készült fotók szerint féltucatnyi kotrógép dolgozott a betemetett járművek kiszabadításán. A mentésben több mint 1300 ember – tűzoltók, katonák, helyi tisztségviselők és lakosok – és több tucatnyi mentőjármű vett részt, a kínai kormány pedig mentőcsapatot küldött a segítségükre. A munkálatokat nagyban nehezítette, hogy nehezen járhatók a hegyi utak.
A lavinák okozta balesetek nem számítanak ritkaságnak a Himalájában. Októberben egy hegymászócsapat 26 tagja vesztette életét egy lavinában az észak-indiai Uttarakhand államban.
