A kínai holdújév ünnepén tartott jótékonysági ételosztás tragikus fordulatot vett, amikor a hatalmas tömegben többen elájultak és az emberek agyontaposták őket. Az ország egyik leggazdagabb embere rendezett étel- és pénzosztást.
Négy ember meghalt és további öten megsérültek egy élelmiszerosztáson, amelyet Kambodzsa egyik leggazdagabb embere rendezett a közelgő kínai holdújév alkalmából. A tragédia csütörtökön történt Phnom Penhben, amikor több száz fős tömeg torlódott össze a kapuk előtt, hogy megkapják a fejenként kiosztott 10 dollárt és két kilogramm rizst.
A rendőrségi tájékoztatás szerint a tömegben többen ájulásig kimerültek, majd a földre zuhantak, ahol halálos sérüléseket szenvedtek.
A mentők a helyszínre érkezve kórházba szállították az áldozatokat, de két nő és két férfi – akik 37 és 71 év közöttiek – életét már nem tudták megmenteni. A mentők kiérkezését követően a hatóságok kiürítették a helyszínt, és az osztást azonnali hatállyal felfüggesztették. A jótékonysági akciót szervező Sok Kong, aki a szállodaipar, a kaszinók és az olajipar területén is érdekelt, évtizedek óta ismert bőkezű adományairól. Szoros kapcsolatot ápol az ország volt miniszterelnökével, és hagyományosan minden évben segíti a szegényebb rétegeket a holdújév alkalmából.
