Több ezren tüntettek Ausztráliában pénteken az ország nemzeti ünnepén. A megmozdulást az őslakosok iránti szolidaritásból szervezték, sokan pedig az ünnep elhagyását vagy a dátum módosítását sürgették.
Sydneyben, Melbourne-ben, Brisbane-ben és a tasmániai Hobartban is voltak megmozdulások. Az Ausztrália-napon arra emlékeznek, amikor a brit gyarmatosítók megalakították Új-Dél-Wales államot, és 1788-ban megérkezett az első, fegyenceket és gyarmatosítókat szállító hajó az ausztrál partokhoz.
Az ország 3,8 százalékát alkotó őslakos közösség – azaz mintegy 26 millió ember – azonban nem kér az ünneplésből és az európai gyarmatosítók idején őket érő igazságtalanságokra hívja fel a figyelmet.
Az őslakosok 65 ezer éve élnek a kontinensen, és sokat szenvedtek attól, hogy a 20. század elején az úgynevezett Fehér Ausztrália-politika keretében megpróbálták őket asszimilálni.Mintegy 100 ezer őslakos gyereket szakítottak el családjától és adtak oda fehér családoknak vagy intézményeknek.
Az aboriginal néven ismert őslakosok Ausztrália gyarmatosítása után 1967-ig egyáltalán nem kaptak polgári jogokat, és napjainkban is hátrányos helyzetben élnek. Az országban 1910 és 1970 között mintegy 100 ezer őslakos gyereket szakítottak el családjától és adtak oda fehér családoknak vagy intézményeknek.
