Tel-Avivban felgyújtotta magát szombat éjjel egy izraeli tüntető a romló szociális helyzet miatt, az egy éve kezdődött széleskörű tüntetések évfordulóján.
A rendőrség szóvivője szerint a negyvenes éveiben járó férfi egy felvonuláson gyúlékony folyadékot öntött magára, és meggyújtotta. A 10-es tévécsatornán látni lehetett az égő embert, akit a körülötte lévők ruhadarabokkal és vízzel próbáltak meg eloltani. Az illetőt kórházba szállították, állapota súlyos.
Az önkéntes áldozat egy levelet hagyott hátra, amelyben azt írta, hogy „az izraeli állam meglopta őt, és emiatt semmije sem maradt”. Név szerint azzal vádolta meg Benjámin Netanjahu kormányfőt és Juval Steinic pénzügyminisztert, hogy „elvesznek a szegénytől és a gazdagoknak adnak”. Az eset pontosabb háttere még nem ismeretes.
Izraelben nagyon ritka az önégetés. 2005-ben egy tiltakozó nő halt meg így, amikor az izraeli megszálló erők kivonultak a Gázai övezetből, és több ezer telepest kényszerűen magukkal vittek.
A társadalom gazdasági helyzetének romlása, a drágaság miatt tavaly nyáron tiltakozó mozgalom kezdődött az országban. Az évfordulón nem sikerült ismét nagy tömegeket mozgósítani: a várt százezrek helyett a legnagyobb felvonuláson is csak mintegy 7 ezren vettek részt Tel-Avivban.
