A mostani esetet nagy figyelem és aggodalom övezte, mivel a precedens értékű ítélet akár a következő 100 olyan aktivista sorsát is eldöntheti, akiket a nemzetbiztonsági törvény kapcsán vettek őrizetbe a hatóságok a 2019-es hongkongi tüntetések kapcsán.
A vitatott hongkongi nemzetbiztonsági törvényt 2020-ban fogadták el, azóta folyamatosan számolja fel a város vezetése Peking nyomására az ellenzéki mozgalmakat.
