A hét végi gyilkosságsorozat halálos áldozatainak száma így 22-re emelkedett
Az újabb áldozatokra leégett házakban bukkantak rá a rendőrség tájékoztatása szerint. Az egyikük egy 17 éves lány.
Hétfőn a hatóság még 19 halálos áldozatról adott hírt – mint utólag kiderült, közéjük sorolta a támadót is –, és már akkor figyelmeztetett, hogy ez feltehetően nem végleges szám, mert öt felgyújtott épület van, többségük lakóház, és nem zárható ki, hogy találnak még holttesteket azoknak a házaknak a maradványai alatt, amelyek teljesen leégtek.
Egy 51 éves férfi, Gabriel Wortman több helyszínen követte el a gyilkosságokat az Új-Skocia-félszigeten elterülő, apró délkelet-kanadai tartományban. A bűncselekmény-sorozat helyi idő szerint szombaton, éjfél előtt másfél órával kezdődött az Atlanti-óceán partján fekvő Portapique városkában, 130 kilométerre északra Halifaxtól. A rendőrség több lakossági bejelentés után vonult ki az első bűntény helyszínére, több halottat talált egy házban és a környékén, több épület pedig lángokban állt. A tettes Truro, Milford és Enfield településeken folytatta a vérengzést, ámokfutása 12 órán át tartott.
A híradások szerint rendőrruhába öltözött, és rendőrautónak álcázott gépkocsit használt. A rendőrök egy benzinkútnál agyonlőtték.
A nyomozás bonyolult és sokáig tart, ezért a gyilkosságsorozat minden részlete továbbra sem ismert. A tettes indíttatásáról továbbra sem mondanak semmit a hatóságok. Annyi derült ki, hogy Wortman fogtechnikus volt, nem volt büntetett előéletű, és nem ismert mindenkit az áldozatai közül. A rendőrök 16 bűnügyi helyszínt fésültek át öt településen a délkelet-kanadai tartomány középső és északi részén. Katonák is segítik a munkájukat.
