Oroszország február 26-án a kora reggeli órákban összehangolt rakéta- és dróntámadást indított Ukrajna több városa ellen. A csapások elérték Kijev mellett Harkiv, Zaporizzsja és Krivij Rih területét is. A helyi hatóságok szerint lakóépületek és civil infrastruktúra sérült meg, több helyen tüzek keletkeztek, és már az első órákban érkeztek jelentések sérültekről és halálos áldozatról is.
Az ukrán fővárosban a Kyiv Independent helyszíni újságírói hajnali 4 óra körül hallották az első robbanásokat, miközben a légvédelmi rendszerek megpróbálták elfogni a közeledő célpontokat. Tyimur Tkacsenko, a kijevi katonai közigazgatás vezetője közölte:
Oroszország ballisztikus rakétákkal és drónokkal támadja a várost, és arra kérte a lakosokat, hogy maradjanak az óvóhelyeken a légiriadó végéig.
Vitalij Klicsko polgármester megerősítette, hogy a légvédelem működésben van, ugyanakkor figyelmeztetett: a veszély nem múlt el, további becsapódások is lehetségesek.
A későbbi jelentések szerint Kijev több kerületében is károk keletkeztek. A közeli Rai-Olenivka települést is találat érte, így a sérültek száma a régióban legalább 14-re emelkedett, köztük egy gyermek.
Zaporizzsjában Ivan Fedorov regionális kormányzó arról számolt be, hogy egy lakóház több emelete kigyulladt, egy ember a romok között rekedt. A támadás egy bevásárlóközpontot és egy magánházat is megrongált. A hivatalos adatok szerint egy ember életét vesztette, nyolcan megsérültek, egy sérültet kórházba vittek. Krivij Rihnél egy toronyház gyulladt ki, két ember – egy 89 éves férfi és egy 82 éves nő – megsérült.

Provokációs tüntetések előkészületei folynak Ukrajna számos városában, mindenkinek óvakodnia attól, hogy részt vegyen rajtuk – közölte csütörtökön az rbc.ua hírportál a Védelmi Minisztérium hírszerzési főosztályának (HUR) Telegram-csatornáján hivatkozva.
A jelentés szerint a katonai titkosszolgálat arról tájékoztatott, hogy a Telegram üzenetküldő névtelen fiókjai olyan embereket keresnek, akik vállalják, hogy pénzért elmennek a nagygyűlésekre. Az ilyen akciók célja Ukrajna katonai és politikai vezetésének, és mindenekelőtt a titkosszolgálatoknak a hiteltelenítése – áll a közleményben
Azokat, akik bedőlnek a hírnek, a katonai elhárítás arra kéri, hogy készítsenek fotókat és videókat a provokatív tiltakozásokról. A HUR hangsúlyozta, hogy a propagandisták a társadalmi polarizáció és az Ukrajnán belüli feszültségkeltés céljából akarnak hamis képet alkotni.
