Nilanta Premaratne, a hadsereg szóvivője szerint a Colombótól mintegy 365 kilométerre északra található Viszuvamadu benzinkútjánál az órák óta üzemanyagért sorban állók kövekkel kezdték dobálni a közeli katonai ellenőrzőpontot. Miután elfogyott az üzemanyag, az emberek összecsaptak a katonákkal.
A portál szerint a rendőrség azt közölte, hogy a hét végén három helyen is összecsapások törtek ki a rendőrök és motorbiciklisták között az üzemanyaghiány miatt, többeket letartóztattak.
Mindeközben a kormány elrendelte az iskolák és közhivatalok ideiglenes bezárását annak érdekében, hogy az üzemanyaghiány miatt fellépett közlekedési nehézségeket mérsékeljék. A 22 milliós ország az 1948-as függetlenné válása óta nem élt át a mostanihoz hasonló gazdasági válságot, amely egyebek között élelmiszer- és gyógyszerhiányban, illetve száguldó inflációban nyilvánul meg.
Srí Lanka már szinte benzin nélkül maradt, és más üzemanyagokból is akut hiány mutatkozik, a szigeten mindennaposak a tüntetések.
Colombo továbbá felfüggesztette a 2026-ig visszafizetendő 25 milliárd dollárból idén esedékes mintegy hétmilliárd dollárnyi külföldi hitel visszafizetését is. Az ország teljes külföldi adóssága 51 milliárd dollár. Az ENSZ arra figyelmeztetett, hogy a szigetországban kialakult gazdasági válság humanitárius katasztrófához vezethet.
