Hatalmas tömegek tüntettek Valenciában a hatóságok által a közelmúltban bekövetkezett halálos árvizek kezelése miatt, és Carlos Mazón regionális vezető lemondását követelték.
Spanyol hírügynökségek szerint szombaton 130 000 ember vonult az utcára – a tüntetők azt skandálták, hogy „mi sárral vagyunk bemocskolva, ti vérrel vagytok bemocskolva”.
Több mint 200 ember halt meg az áradásokban, amelyeket a Valenciát és a szomszédos tartományokat októberben sújtó özönvízszerű esőzések okoztak. Nyolcvan embert még mindig eltűntként tartanak nyilván.

A hét eleje óta tartó heves esőzések városokat dúltak fel, a halálos áldozatok száma kétszáz fölé emelkedett.
Spanyolország miniszterelnöke ötezer katonát, valamint ötezer rendőrt és polgárőrt vezényelt Valencia régióba, mert a lakosok bírálták a helyi hatóságokat az ottani katasztrofális árvízre adott válaszreakciók miatt – írja a BBC.
A hétfőn kezdődött heves esőzések olyan mértékű áradásokat okoztak, amelyek hidakat romboltak le és sárral borítottak be városokat. Sokan víz, élelmiszer és áram nélkül maradtak. A halálos áldozatok száma szombaton 211-re emelkedett, a legtöbb haláleset Valenciában és környékén történt – jelentette be Pedro Sánchez miniszterelnök.
Továbbra is érvényben van vasárnapig az Északkelet- és Dél-Spanyolországban lévő figyelmeztetés, ezen kívül a Baleár-szigeteken szombatra is kiadtak egy figyelmeztetést.
Valencia régióban nagyjából 1700 katona dolgozik az áldozatok felkutatásában és mentésében, bár a remény, hogy további túlélőket találnak, egyre csökken. A munkálatok egy részében kiszivattyúzzák a vizet a földalatti alagutakból és parkolókból, mert félő, hogy emberek rekedhettek ott a víz beáramlása miatt.
A mentést végző újabb csapatoknak szükségük van nehézgépekre, teherautókra és buldózerekre, így szervezettebben és gyorsabban menne a munka – mondta Paco Polit valenciai újságíró a BBC-nek.
A helyi hatóságokat kritika éri a gyors reagálás és az árvíz előtti figyelmeztetések hiánya miatt. Amparo Andres, akinek 40 éve van boltja Valenciában, a BBC-nek elmondta, hogy egy ponton a víz a nyakáig ért az épületben, és azt hitte, hogy meg fog halni.
„Legalább életben vagyok, de mindent elvesztettem. Az üzletemet, az otthonomat” – mondta. Úgy gondolja, hogy a kormány nem tesz semmit, csak a környékbeli fiatalok segítségére számíthatnak.
A regionális kormány által felügyelt polgári védelmi ügynökség helyi idő szerint kedden este 8 óra után adta ki vészjelzést a Valencia városában és környékén élők telefonjára. Ekkor az árvíz sok helyen már gyorsan emelkedett, és valahol már látható pusztítást végzett. Egy helyi lakos elmondta, hogy a terület hajlamos a hirtelen áradásra.
„Felháborító, hogy az önkormányzat nem tett semmit, pedig tudta, hogy ez bekövetkezik” – mondta.
Az elpusztított Paiporta városában, ahol eddig több mint 60 halálos áldozatról érkezett jelentés, a lakosok csalódottak amiatt, hogy a segélyek túl lassan érkeznek. „Nincs elég tűzoltó, az ásók sem érkeztek meg” – mondta egy 33 éves gyógyszerész az AFP hírügynökségnek, miközben segített eltakarítani a sarat egy barátja házából.
A madridi szövetségi kormányt azért is bírálják, mert nem mozgósította hamarabb a hadsereget, és elutasította a francia kormány ajánlatát, hogy 200 tűzoltót küldjön a keresési és mentési munkálatokhoz. Pedro Sanchez miniszterelnök azt mondta, mindent megtesz a katasztrófa károsultjainak megsegítésére.
A valenciai önkéntes takarítási munkálatok során több százan vonultak ki az árvíz által leginkább sújtott területekre, nagyrészt fiatalok, akik a közösségi média segítségével szerveződnek csapatokba.
A Telegraph szerint több mint 250 ember eltűnését feltételezik Spanyolországban – ezt mondták munkálatokban részt vevő nem hivatalos források az El Españolnak. A kormány miniszterei három nappal a katasztrófa kezdete után többtucatnyi ember eltűnéséről számoltak be.

Valencia városában több helyen is több mint 200 mm eső esett május 3-án 24 óra alatt. A város egyik meteorológiai állomásán 260,9 mm-t mértek, ráadásul másnap tovább folytatódott az esőzés.
Valencia utcáit elárasztotta a víz, a tűzoltóknak a járműveikben rekedt utasokat kellett kimenteni – írja a The Local.
A városban legalább négy közúti alagutat elöntött a víz, több iskolát is bezártak, a vasúti és tömegközlekedést is felfüggesztették a hatóságok.
A spanyol hatóságok a közeli Alicante és Castellón régiókból is hasonló állapotokról számoltak be – írja a BBC.
Az elmúlt napokban az ország más területein is extrém időjárási körülmények uralkodtak. Május másodikán jégeső és heves esőzések okoztak áradásokat Murcia régió egyes részein, de Madridban is többször riasztani kellett a helyi katasztrófavédelmet és a mentőket – írja a The Watchers.
